3rd 1966 Re-Play

Once again the Los Angles Dodgers finished the 1966 replay with the best record; winning the West by 8 games over the 2nd place Giants. The Dodgers had the league's best pitching (team ERA 2.46) and defense (only 73 errors). Sandy Koufax (23-13, 1.86) pitched brilliantly, but got shaky run support, losing five 1-run games. Koufax again led the league in strikeouts with 358 in 310 innings worked. A young Don Sutton (15-11, 1.72), Claude Osteen (18-13, 2.75) and Don Drysdale (17-8, 2.30) rounded out the best starting 4 pitchers in the season. Phil Regan (2-0, 31 Svs, 1.07 ERA) was among the leagues best closers. The Giants, led by Willie McCovey (.333, 44, 114) and Willie Mays (.277, 42, 107) and Jan Marichal (24-6, 1.60) missed the playoffs by a single game. In the Eastern Division the Philadelphia Phillies had a strong 2nd half to win by 2 games over the Baltimore Orioles and 3 over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jim Bunning (29-4, 1.66) had an outstanding season, easily winning the CYA. He was joined in the Phillies rotation by Chris Short (22-13, 2.81) and Larry Jackson (18-13, 2.60). Darold Knowels (2.40 ERA) led the league in saves with 39. Richie Allen (.291, 31, 92) was the Phillies main offensive weapon. The Baltimore Orioles captured the wild card spot by a single game over both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants. Frank Robinson (.330, 44, 128), Boog Powell (.296, 36, 96), Brooks Robinson (.273, 21, 107) and Luis Aparicio (.296, 106 runs) led the Oriloes offense attack while Jim Palmer's 13 wins was the most on Baltimore's pitching staff. The Detriot Tigers won a tight Central Division race by 2 games over the Chicago White Sox. Norm Cash (.320, 42, 144) was the Tigers top hitter, led the league in RBIs and captured the MVP. Earl Wilson (17-12, 3.13) and Denny McLain (18-12, 3.24) were the mainstays of the Tiger rotation. Jim Torre of the Milwaukee Braves had the season's top batting average with .361 while teammate Hank Aaron led in home runs with 47. Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates led in runs scored (121) and hits (218). The St Louis Cardinals Lou Brock led in stolen bases with 83.

MVP Norm Cash - DET

CYA Jim Bunning - PHI

Seed #1 Los Angeles Dodgers 98-58 Seed #2 Philadelphia Phillies 93-63

Seed #3 Detroit Tigers 87-69 Seed #4 Baltimore Orioles 91-65

Detriot will head for Philadelphia and the Baltimore will travel to Los Angeles for the 1st round of the playoffs.

1st Round Divisional Playoffs:

Game #1 Detroit Tigers 1 Philadelphia Phillies 2 WP Bunning LP Wilson
Game #2 Detroit Tigers 5 Philadelphia Phillies 3 WP McLain LP Jackson
Game #3 Philadelphia Phillies 13 Detroit Tigers 0 WP Short LP Wickersham
Game #4 Philadelphia Phillies 0 Detroit Tigers 1 WP Wilson LP Bunning
Game #5 Philadelphia Phillies 3 Detroit Tigers 1 11 inn WP Jackson LP Gladding SV Knowles
Game #6 Detroit Tigers 2 Philadelphia Phillies 8 WP Short LP Wickersham

Jim Bunning pitched a 1-hitter in the opening game of the series, but the Tigers came back in game #2 behind an effective Denny McLain to tie the series. Game 3 was a slugfest for the Phillies as they cracked 4 homers, including 2 by series MVP Richie Allen scoring 13 times on 16 hits while Chris Short tossed a complete game 2-hit shutout. Earl Wilson returned the favor in the next game, pitching a 3-hit shutout edging Bunning by a 1-0 score. Game 5 went into extra innings before the Richie Allen doubled home 2 to give the edge to Philadelphia. Returning home for game #6 the Phillies headed for the World Series with a convincing 8-2 win highlighted by a 3-run blast by Allen in the 5th. Richie Allen hit .455 with 4 homers and 12 RBIs leading the Phillies to victory.

2nd Round Divisional Playoffs:

Game #1 Baltimore Orioles 1 Los Angeles Dodgers 0 11inn WP McNally LP Moeller SV S.Miller
Game #2 Baltimore Orioles 3 Los Angeles Dodgers 2 11 inn WP S.Miller LP Perranoski SV Fisher
Game #3 Los Angeles Dodgers 3 Baltimore Orioles 1 WP Osteen LP Palmer Sv Regan
Game #4 Los Angeles Dodgers 4 Baltimore Orioles 1 WP Koufax LP Bunker SV Regan
Game #5 Los Angeles Dodgers 1 Baltimore Orioles 0 WP Drysdale LP McNally
Game #6 Baltimore Orioles 7 Los Angeles Dodgers 5 WP Barber LP Osteen SV S.Miller
Game #7 Baltimore Orioles 2 Los Angeles Dodgers 4 WP Koufax LP Palmer SV Regan

Baltimore took the first two games in Los Angeles, both in low scoring extra inning affairs, which seemed strangely reminiscent of the Real 1966 World Series. But instead of being swept in 4 straight, when the series moved to Baltimore the Dodgers pitching took over and allowed the Orioles only 2 runs in 3 games at home, winning all three. Returning to LA the two teams engaged in a comparable slugfest with the Orioles scoring more runs in this one game than they had in the previous 5 games combined. Brooks Robinson led the onslaught going 4 for 4 with 3 doubles forcing a deciding game #7. Dodger pitching ace Sandy Koufax out pitched Jim Palmer in a duel between future Hall-of-Famers, as the Dodgers won the first home game of the series. Koufax drove in 2 of the Dodgers 4 runs himself in this final game and was declared the series MVP.

3rd Re-Play World Series:

Game #1 Philadelphia Phillies 2 Los Angeles Dodgers 1 WP Bunning LP Drysadale
Game #2 Philadelphia Phillies 2 Los Angeles Dodgers 4 WP Koufax LP Jackson SV Regan
Game #3 Los Angeles Dodgers 2 Philadelphia Phillies 0 WP Osteen LP Short
Game #4 Los Angeles Dodgers 4 Philadelphia Phillies 1 WP Drysdale LP Bunning SV Perranoski
Game #5 Los Angeles Dodgers 1 Philadelphia Phillies 2 11 inn WP Knowles LP Moeller
Game #6 Philadelphia Phillies 4 Los Angeles Dodgers 2 12 inn WP Humphreys LP Sutton
Game #7 Philadelphia Phillies 3 Los Angeles Dodgers 0 WP Bunning LP Drysdale

Jim Bunning tossed a 1-hitter to win game #1 allowing just a 1st inning triple by Willie Davis who later scored on a sac fly. Sandy Koufax took game 2 to tie the series and Claude Osteen tossed a 4-hit shutout in game #3 while the Dodgers hit 2 home runs to give LA the series lead. The Phillies found themselves with their backs to the wall after game 4 which the Dodgers took 4-1 when Don Drysdale out-pitched Bunning, but in extra innings in game 5 Philadelphia stayed alive on a game winning double by Jackie Brandt scored Bill White. Game 6 was yet another extra inning affair as the series returned to LA. In the top of the 12th Richie Allen scored on Tony Gonzalez's single and Dick Grote hit a sac fly to plate Jim Callison as the Philies forced a game 7. In that game there was no dening the Phillies the pennant as Jim Bunning pitched on of his best games of the season, tossing a complete game 1-hitter, walking no one while striking out 8. Richie Allen provided all the support Bunning needed with a 1st inning 3-run home run as the Phils come from behind 3 games to 1 to win the series. Bunning was the series MVP.
