2nd 1966 Re-Play

The Dodgers had the Re-Play's best record for the second season in the row, led again by an outstanding pitching staff which allowed a meager 2.15 team ERA, almost a full run lower than any other team. Sandy Koufax had a 20-7 record with a 1.73 ERA while team-mate Don Drysdale finished 19-11 1.64 while tossing 13 shutouts. Don Sutton, 19-10, 2.12 and Claude Osteen 17-9, 2.27 finished out the Dodgers fearsome foursome, which won the Western Division by 8 games over the 2nd place Giants. But San Francisco won a tight wild card race edging by just 1 game both St Louis and Philadelphia. The Giants were led by Willie Mays who hit .304 with 49 home runs and 117 RBIs. Jimmy Hart blasted 33 and Willie McCovey chipped in 25 home runs, helping their team lead the league in homers. In the Eastern Division Pittsburgh had the best team batting average led by MVP Roberto Clemente who also hit 30 homers, a league leading 129 RBIs, and a batting average of .344, second best in the league. Other heavy hitting Pirates included Willie Stargell who hit .329 with 34 homers and 105 RBIs; Don Clendenon hit .322 with 33 home runs and 115 RBIs. Matty Alou hit .338, Gene Alley .293 and Manny Mota .310. The Central Division was won by another heavy hitting club, the Milwaukee Braves. Felipe Alou finished with the highest batting average, .349, and the most runs scored, 126. Joe Torre, .320 with 30 home runs with 108 RBIs, Hank Aaron (45 HRs, 118 RBIs) and Rico Carty, (.300) also carried big bats. The Twins finished in last place in the Central, after making the playoffs in the 1st 1966 Re-Play, but still had the leagues best home run hitter in Harmon Killebrew, who blasted 50. The St. Louis Cardinals missed the playoffs by a game, but boasted the leagues best base stealer in Lou Brock who stole 98, and the leagues CYA winner in Bob Gibson who finished with a 24-6 record and a 1.53 ERA.

Seed #1 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 96 Wins Seed #2 PITTSBURGH Pirates 91 Wins
Seed #3 MILWAUKEE Braves 85 wins Seed #4 SANFRANCISCO Giants 88 Wins

Since the Dodgers and the Giants are from the same division, the Dodgers will host the Braves while the Giants will travel to play the Pirates.

1st Divisional Playoffs:

Game #1 SANFRANCISCO Giants 2 PITTSBURGH Pirates 1 WP Marichal LP Veale Sv Linzy
Game #2 SANFRANCISCO Giants 3 PITTSBURGH Pirates 1 WP G.Perry LP Fryman Sv McDaniel
Game #3 PITTSBURGH Pirates 3 SANFRANCISCO Giants 2 WP Law LP Bolin Sv Face
Game #4 PITTSBURGH Pirates 8 SANFRANCISCO Giants 5 WP Veale LP Marichal
Game #5 PITTSBURGH Pirates 3 SANFRANCISCO Giants 5 WP G.Perry LP Sisk Sv McDaniel
Game #6 SANFRANCISCO Giants 7 PITTSBURGH Pirates 10 WP Mikkelsen LP McDaniel Sv Face
Game #7 SANFRANCISCO Giants 1 PITTSBURGH Pirates 6 WP Veale LP Bolin Sv McBean

The Giants won the first two games on the arms of their top two pitchers, Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. Both starters limited the potent Pirate offense to just one run. Willie Mays hit a HR in game #1 and two doubles in game #2, but Pittsburgh squeaked by in game #3 and then started smacking the ball with some authority in game #4, led by Willie Stargell's 4-4, 2 doubles, a HR and 4 RBIs to even the series. Game 5 saw San Francisco's SS Tito Fuentes hit a 2-run HR and a 2-run double to power them to a victory. Game 6 was a slugfest with the Giants taking a 5-0 lead behind Willie Mays bases clearing triple in the 5th. But Pittsburgh fought back scoring 4 in the 5th inning and 3 in the 7th as they cracked out 17 hits en route to a 10-7 win. Bob Veale then limited the Giants to a lone run on 3 hits and Willie Stargell blasted a 3-run homer as the Pirates won the series in 7 games to make their 2nd trip to the series in these Re-Plays.

2nd Divisional Playoffs:

Game #1 MILWAUKEE Braves 2 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 0 WP Johnson LP Koufax
Game #2 MILWAUKEE Braves 4 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 2 WP Carroll LP Brewer Sv Kline
Game #3 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 6 MILWAUKEE Braves 4 WP Sutton LP Leamaster Sv Regan
Game #4 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 2 MILWAUKEE Braves 0 WP Koufax LP Johnson
Game #5 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 2 MILWAUKEE Braves 0 WP D.Drysdale LP T.Cloninger
Game #6 MILWAUKEE Braves 4 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 5 WP B.Miller LP Carroll

The Braves pitching staff looked like the Dodgers staff typically did in the first two games, with Ken Johnson pitching a shutout in game #1 and Tony Cloninger allowing just 2 runs in game #2. But their Dodger impersonation stopped in the 4th inning of game #3 when the Dodgers exploded for 5 runs to take the lead and their first win. Sandy Kofu and Don Drysdale then tossed back-to-back shutouts in the next two games. With their backs against the wall in Game #6 the Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead with the help of Rico Carty's 3-run HR. But the Dodgers fought back to make the score 4 -3 in the bottom of the 8th and they then took a page from the Braves book when Jim Lefebvre hit a 2-run home and the Dodgers are headed back to the World Series.

2nd 1966 World Series:

Game #1 PITTSBURGH Pirates 1 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 8 WP Koufax LP Veale
Game #2 PITTSBURGH Pirates 2 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 1 WP Fryman LP Drysdale Sv Face
Game #3 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 3 PITTSBURGH Pirates 7 WP McBean LP Sutton
Game #4 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 3 PITTSBURGH Pirates 4 WP Veale LP Koufax Sv Face
Game #5 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 6 PITTSBURGH Pirates 4 WP Drysdale LP Sisk SV Regan
Game #6 PITTSBURGH Pirates 4 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 3 WP Fryman LP Sutton SV Face

Sandy Koufax was true to form in the first game of the series, pitching 7 strong innings, allowing just 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 11 and walking 2. Both starters pitched well in game #2 as the Pirates won the 2-1 contest to even the series. They then scored 4 runs in the 1st inning of game 3 highlighted by the first of 2 homers by Don Clendenon and coasted to the victory. They then came from behind to win game #4 off Koufax and they led the series 3 games to 1. The Dodgers weren't going to concede them anything, though and in game #5 Don Drysdale and Ron Fairly, whoi went 3 for 4 with a HR led the way. The Pirates won the next game and the series on the bats of Roberto Clemente and series MVP Don Clendenon as the both blasted homers early and Roy Face slam the door by getting the last 6 outs, for on strike outs as the Pirates win the Championship.
