3rd 1965 Re-Play

The 3rd 1965 Re-Play had close races in every division. With 6 games to go there was a single game lead in every division. The West saw the Angels, Dodgers and Giants neck-and-neck the first part of the season, and while the Giants faded into the rest of the pack, California stayed on Los Angeles heals all the way. The last few days of the season saw the Angels lose 4 of their last 5 games, finishing 4 games behind the Dodgers, who had the leagues best record. The Angels consolation prize was the Wild Card berth. Both teams had great pitching. The Dodgers pitching ace Sandy Koufax went 24-11 2.02, while the Angels ace was Frank Newman 19-11 2.09. After 122 games the Central Division had a 3-way tie between the Twins, Reds and the Braves with the White Sox 2 back and the Tigers 4. Down the stretch it was Cincinnati and Minnesota battling it out, with the two teams finishing tied at the seasons end. A one game playoff was held to determine the division winner with the loser heading home. It was tied in the bottom of the 8th when Frank Robinson's dramatic 2-run homer was the deciding blow in the Reds 4-2 win. In the East the Pirates started slowly, winning just 8 of their first 25 games, but they fought back valiantly and at the all-star break were in 2nd place behind the Indians. With 2 weeks left in the season there was a 3-way tie for the Eastern Division between the Indians, the Pirates and the Yankees, but down the stretch the Pirates were 1 game better than the Indians to capture the division. Hank Aaron led the league in batting average, slugging average, OBP, doubles and was 2nd in home runs to capture the MVP. Sam McDowell tossed 2 no-hitters and won 21 game with a 2.01 ERA to win the CYA.

The Reds Sammy Ellis took a 4-3 lead into the 9th in game #1, but gave up a 3-run homer as the Reds dropped the 1st game to the Angels. California also won the 2nd game, again in the 9th inning when Jim Piersall tripled and scored on Jim Freosi's single. Dean Chance shutdown and shutout the Reds in game 3 allowing just 2 singles and the Angels had a 3 games to none lead. Reds rallied to take game 4 led by Vada Pinson's 3 hits including 2 doubles, but California capped the series in 5 games when George Brunet tossed a 4-hitter allowing just 1 run with Jose Cardinal and Jim Piersall sparking the Angles 6 run attack.

The home teams during this series were most ungracious hosts. Sandy Koufax shutout the Pirates in game 1 with a sparkling 2-hitter and Don Drysdale and 3 relievers allowed just 1 run as the Dodgers took the 2nd game as well. But when the series moved to Pittsburgh the Pirates came alive with a climactic 9th inning, game winning solo home run by catcher Jim Pagliaroni. Willie Stargell drove in 3 with a double and a homer in game #4 and Vern Law allowed just 1 run as the Pirates tied the series. Then in game 5 Bob Veale and Don Schwall edged Don Drysdale with Jim Pagliaroni again hitting a game winning solo home run in the 7th. Returning to LA Claude Osteen went the distance in game #6 allowing only 1 run while Jim Lefebvre drove in a pair. Koufax and Law faced off in the deciding game #7. The game was tied at 3 going into the bottom of the 9th. Maurey Wills singled, stole second base then moved to third when usually sure handed Bill Mazeroski misplayed a Jim Gilliam ground ball. Willie Davis's sac fly drove in Wills and the Dodgers are headed to the World Series.

Game #6 CALIFORNIA Angels 1 LOS ANGELES Dodgers 2 10inn WP B.Miller LP Chance

Jose Cardenal leading off the first game of the series hit a solo home run, sparking an early 3-0 lead off Don Drysdale as the Angels take game 1. Trailing 3-1 in the 7th in the next game the Dodgers took advantage of 2 Angel errors to score 3 times tying up the series. Game #3 was a brilliant pitching paradox. Claude Osteen tossed a 2-hit shutout for the win, but Dean Chance tossed 8 innings of no-hit ball but allowed just an unearned run in the 4th when he over-threw 1st base on a ground ball. Angel reliever Dick Kelley came on in the 9th and set down the Dodgers in order and Chance and Kelley combined for a no-hitter, but lost 1-0. Click here for the script of the Lost No-Hitter and for the Boxscore. Then California's Frank Newman tossed a complete game 4-hit shutout in game 4 to tie the series at 2 game apiece. It was the Dodger 4-hit shutout by Sandy Koufax in game 5 that set up the deciding game 6, which was another matchup between Chance and Osteen and resulted in another pitching duel. Tied 1 to 1 after 9 the game went into extra innings when the Dodgers won it on a Sac Fly by Wes Parker. Claude Osteen was named the series MVP.
