3rd 1962 Re-Play

The 3rd Re-Play saw the San Francisco Giants leading the Western Division wire-to-wire, jumping out of the gate by wining 21 of their first 24 games. Their 105 wins were the best so far in any re-play. The Yankees were sluggish at the start, playing only .500 ball through April, but by the All-Star break led by 7.5 games over the Pittsburgh Pirate and won their 3rd straight division title by 10.5 games. In the Central Division it was again a race between five teams. At the All-Star break the White Sox led the Tigers and the Reds by just 1/2 a game, with the Braves and the Twins both just 3.5 back. The Tigers led by 7 with less than 30 games to go, but the Twins, who were at the time just 63-62, made a charge winning 21 of 29 and found themselves tied for the lead and hosting the Tigers for the last 2 games of the season. The Twins hit three solo home runs to win the 1st game of the series 3 to 2, and then Camilo Pascual pitched a complete game 2-hiiter to win the 2nd game 3 to 1 as the Twins nailed down the 3rd seed in the playoffs. Tommy Davis again led the league in batting average with a .370 mark; Harmon Killebrew blasted 51 Home Runs to lead in that category while Don Drysdale led the league in wins with 28 and ERA with 1.81.
