1937 Season: When It Was A Game

The New York Yankees ran away with the American League title in 1937 for the second straight year, winning 108 games and finishing an amazing 26 games ahead of the rest of the pack. Red Ruffing (28-4, 2.10) won his 2nd CYA in a row. Lefty Gomez (21-6, 1.84) also won more than 20+ games. The Yankee offense was again led by the likes of 1B Lou Gehrig (.390-37-141), C Bill Dickey (.341-23-128) and Joe Dimaggio (.3455-27-102), but the LA MVP went to Philadelphia's Joe Medwick (.398-38-167) who finished 2nd in the league in batting average, HRs and RBI. IN the NL the races was closewr, but the New York Giants still won by 7 games. They were led by MVP Mel Ott (.338-25-113) who led the NL ni HRs, and by the best pitching staff in the league. The Ginats had the best two pitchers in the league, Carl Hubbell (21-6, 2.62) and CYA Cliff Melton (21-5, 2.08), who was the only thing that kept Hubbell from winning the award for the 4th time.
