Math 165 Calculus I Section T Spring 2012

Class meetings: MTWR 5:10-6:00pm, Carver 150

Office hours: T 1-2pm WR 4-5pm or by appointment
Textbook: Dale Varberg, Edvin J. Purcell, Steven E. Rigdon Calculus, ninth edition

Course objectives: Limits, derivatives and its applications, integrals, introduction to the ordinary differential equations. The course covers chapters 1-4, 6.
Course policy:

• Attendance is strongly encouraged. If you miss any class, it is your responsibility to go over the material which was covered. 

· Check the Black Board system for this class to get access to the homework and other announcements.

• Any changes to course policies or this syllabus will be announced in class.

Homework: 

• Homework will be assigned and collected once a week.
• You are recommended to work on the suggested homework problems as well.
• Feel free to ask questions during the lectures and stop by my office during my office hours for any questions you have. 
• Late homework will not be accepted.

Quiz policy:

• We will have one quiz per week except final and midterm weeks.
• Depending on the goal, there will be short Quizzes (about 10 minutes long) and long Quizzes (25-30 minutes long) , closed books and closed notes, no calculators (unless otherwise specified)

Make-up Policy for Exams and Quizzes:

• All students are required to take the exams and quizzes at the scheduled time. 
•  If an emergency causes you to miss one, you must contact the instructor within 24 hours of the class in order to be able to make it up.  
• Make-ups will only be given in the case of illness, family emergency, or another extreme situation and documentation will be needed to verify that the situation warrants a make-up tests.

Grading policy: 

Your grade will be based on your performance on the homework, quizzes and exams:

Homework 200 points;

Quizzes 200 points;

Midterm 150 points;

Final Exam 200 points.

Tentative grading scale:

• A >90%
• 90%>B>80%
• 80%>C>70%
• 70%>D>60%
• F otherwise
