State Capacity and Political Voice & Stability
This graph plots the 10 most populous developing countries plus Cameroon, Egypt, and the United States based on the capacity of the state on the Y-axis and the degree of political stability & voice on the X-axis.* As the trend line indicates, the higher the level of voice and stability, the greater the capacity of the state, although this presentation does not demonstrate that voice and stability cause greater capacity. This chart is based on data compiled by D. Kaufmann A. Kraay, and M. Mastruzzi, "Governance Matters IV: Governance Indicators for 1996-2004" (May 2005).
Key to Abbreviations
* I have measured capacity based on three indicators -- government effectiveness, rule of law, and control of corruption -- and political voice and stability on two indicators -- voice & accountability and political stability.
