Glucan Biopolymers |
Starch (see also starch structure) is a homopolymer of glucose, linked together as either α-1,4-D-Glucan or α-1,6-D-Glucan. |
Cellulose (see also cellulose structure) is a homopolymer of glucose, linked together as β-1,4-D-Glucan. |
Hemicellulose (see also hemicellulose structure) is a mixed glycan polymer of several sugars including xylose, arabinose, glucose, mannose and galactose. |
Mixed-Linkage Glucan (see also glucan structure) is a homopolymer of glucose, linked together as β-1,4-D-Glucan and β-1,3-D-Glucan. |
Glucan biopolymers are polysaccharides of D-glucose monomers linked by glucosidic bonds. These biopolymers represent the primary storage and structural components of plants. Plant glucan biopolymers include Starch, Cellulose and Mixed-Linkage Glucan. Lignocellulose is composed of cellulose and mixed-linkage glucan mixed with the glycan biopolymer hemicellulose, all cross-linked with Lignin. These biopolymers are vital as a renewable source of feed, food and biomass for liquid fuel production.
