Children’s Jigsaw Puzzles With an Added Twist

Many commercially available cardboard jigsaw puzzles come with additional things to do with them besides assembling the puzzle.  Most of them are aimed at individuals who just hate taking puzzles apart after spending so many hours piecing them together, while others involve knowing trivia or solving crosswords prior to assembling the puzzle.  Solve-the-mystery type puzzles are mentioned elsewhere so are deliberately excluded here as are puzzle twists for adults.

This list is in a very beginning stage and I am quite certain it is nowhere near complete.  I am not actively searching for items to add to the page – but I do add new puzzles if I discover them while looking for puzzles aimed at adults.  Please contact me if you have additional titles/details.  I am deliberately excluding online, electronic, or computer puzzles.

Situation 4 – 1968, for 2-4 players, ages 8 to adult.  The game consists of two identical rectangular puzzles in different shades (one green and one brown).  Two separate teams compete to assemble their parts the fastest while preventing the other side from completing their sections.  Tanks defend territory by preventing the player's opponent from playing a puzzle piece which would connect to the piece the tank is on. Paratroopers allow the player to play a puzzle piece which connects to their opponent's puzzle instead of their own.  Rules are available as a PDF file.

Situation 7 – 1969, for 2-4 players, ages 8 to adult.  Set of 2 round cardboard puzzles, one blue and one purple, each 19” in diameter and 90 pieces – played on a circular board and set in outer space with astronauts, satellites and rockets replacing the paratroops and tanks.  Contains playing board and implements for game where each player races to complete puzzle without having pieces claimed by opposing players.
