Course
Description:
This course is intended to introduce students basic procedures and techniques
for solving ordinary differential equations. First order equations, linear
equations, and constant coefficient equations. Eigenvalue methods for systems
of first order linear equations. Introduction to stability and phase plane
analysis.
· Textbook: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 8th edition, by William E. Boyce and Richard C. DiPrima.
· Syllabus: Tentative schedule of the lectures.
· Homework: Homework will be collected weekly. Problems will be partly graded. Homework is due at the end of class on the day it is due. Late homework will not be accepted for any reason. Please keep in your mind that doing homework makes you familiar to the fundamental concepts and basic techniques and deepens your understanding. Its importance can never be over-emphasized. Please feel free to talk to me whenever you have difficulty or are unsure of your answers.
· Attendance: Students are expected to attend at least 75% of the classes to pass this course. Attendance sheets will be passed in class to sign up.
· Exams: There will be 4 in-class exams and the final exam. Exam problems will be similar to homework problems. Calculators will be allowed during exams. But you must show your work on the papers step by step to get full credit. No make-up exams, except for special circumstances. If an emergency causes you to miss an exam, contact me within 48 hours.
· Course Grading: Course grades will be given based on the homework (20%), exams (70%), and attendance of classes (10%). Here is a tentative grading scale: A over 90%; B over 80%; C over 70%; D over 60%; F below 60%.
· Software: You may need software (such as Matlab, or the one with the textbook) to do homework problems. It is your responsibility to learn how to use it.
·
Disability Accommodations: If you have a disability and require accommodations, please
contact the instructor early in the semester so that your learning needs may be
appropriately met. You will need to provide documentation of your disability to
the Disability Resources (DR) office, located on the main floor of the
