Project guidelines

 

You will complete one project that will worth of 150 points. This project is an extended version of regular class assignments with greater emphasis on the critique of author’s position and arguments. The main purpose of the project is the synthesis of what you learned in class. In the project you will need to demonstrate your ability to apply sociological perspective (seeing the general in the particular and the strange in the familiar) in the analysis of an issue of your choice. In the end of the semester you will submit written report.

Length: 6 pages maximum.    

Margins: Top 1’, Bottom 1’, Left 1’, Right 1’;

Spacing: Double-Spaced;

Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt.;

 

When writing your report, please, use the following guidelines: 

  1. Introduction. This part of your report should explain what this analysis is about and what is in the report. This part of your report should be approximately one paragraph long. You will be given up to 5 points for this part of your analysis.
  2. What is the main point of an author? Go beyond of what the author is saying; try to understand what the author means. This part of your report should be approximately two paragraphs long. You will be given up to 10 points for this part of your analysis.
  3. How does the author argue his/her main point: (a) what arguments he/she uses to build the case and (b) what facts and evidence he/she uses to prove it? This part of your report should be approximately 1 page long. You will be given up to 20 points for this part of your analysis.
  4. Critique: (a) are there any logical problems in the author’s reasoning? (b) Are there any arguable arguments and facts/evidence in the authors reasoning? This part of your report should be approximately 1 page long. You will be given up to 30 points for this part of your analysis.
  5. Sociological perspective on the issue. In this part of your analysis you will argue the same case as the author; however you may come to a different conclusion or build an entirely different argument. In your analysis you should consider all three main sociological paradigms and synthesize the perspectives of these paradigms in your reasoning. This part of your report should be approximately 4 pages long. You will be given up to 80 points for this part of your analysis.
  6. Conclusion. Summarize your findings and your arguments. This part of your report should be approximately 2 paragraphs long. You will be given up to 5 points for this part of your analysis.
