Many Merit employees at Iowa State University hold positions in which the conditions of their employment are governed by the state of Iowa’s contract with AFSME. These employees are referred to as “covered Merit employees.” When covered Merit employees need help with conflict in their workplace, the union representative for their Local is available to assist them. This applies to University employees who are union members as well as employees who are not union members. If you are not sure who your union representative is, Human Resource Services or the Ombuds Office will be happy to give you that contact information.
Employees who are in the Confidential and Supervisory group of Merit employees (also known as “uncovered merit employees”) are welcome to work with the Ombuds Office if they chose to do so.
