Prerequisites:
There are no fixed prerequisites for this course. Knowledge of statistics, optimization, and computer algorithms is helpful.

Assignments and Grading

Homework:
There will be five homework assignments for this course that will count for 20% of the overall grade.

Exams:
There will be two exams in this class. 
  • A closed book midterm exam will be held in class on Monday October 20th. This will be a multiple choice exam and will be worth 10% of the final grade. 
  • A comprehensive final exam will be held that will account for 20% of the grade. This will be an open book and open notes exam and will be held during the regularly scheduled exam session.
Computing Project:
There will be two group projects, both requiring extensive use of computer software. However, programming experience is not needed. The first project will be worth 20% of the grade, and the second project will be worth 30% of the grade.

Computing

We will use the Weka machine learning system that is available for free downloading courtesy of the Machine Learning Group of the University of Waikato.  You will need to have Java installed on your system to use Weka.
