AMES, Iowa -- A committee has been appointed to conduct a national search for a new dean of the Iowa State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The search committee is chaired by Richard Ross, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

"We're seeking nominations and applications on a national and international level," Ross said. "But that does not preclude applicants from within Iowa State. The emphasis of the search is on someone with very strong scholarship for this position."

Search committee members include: Dawn Bratsch-Prince, associate professor of foreign languages and literatures; Anne Campbell, undergraduate student in history; John Corbett, distinguished professor of chemistry; Noel Cressie, distinguished professor of statistics; John Eighmey, chair of journalism and mass communication; Arnel Hallauer, distinguished professor of agronomy; Steven Kawaler, professor of physics and astronomy; Valerie Kepner, graduate student in economics; Patricia Keith, professor of sociology; Ardith Maney, professor of political science; Harley Moon, professor of veterinary pathology; Alan Myers, associate professor of biochemistry; Joanne Nystrom, administrative specialist in botany; Donald Thompson, distinguished professor of aerospace engineering; Kirk Smith, associate professor of music; Roberta Vann, Professor of English and Edwin Lewis, associate provost.

The new dean will replace Elizabeth Hoffman, who accepted the position of provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She had served as dean since July 1993. Richard Hoffmann, professor of zoology and genetics and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been named interim dean of the college.

Applications will be accepted through Dec. 1 or until the position is filled, Ross said. The committee hopes the position can be filled by July 1, 1998.
