REGENTS APPROVE PLANS FOR ISU COLLEGE OF DESIGN ADDITION
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The design and budget for a significant addition to Iowa State University's College of Design has been approved by the State Board of Regents.
At a meeting Thursday (Oct. 16), the regents approved the schematic design and budget for a planned $3 million addition designed by Baldwin White Architects, Des Moines. The addition will bring much needed physical and technological improvements to the college, said Mark Engelbrecht, dean of the College of Design. The addition will be on the southeast wall of the existing building and will face campus.
Features of the project include:
"The building expansion is an important part of our effort to center the college with the rest of the university," Engelbrecht said. "The auditorium and upgraded atrium will bring new life to the building and provide facilities the whole campus can use."
- A 250-seat auditorium for large group coursework presentations and other college and university events.
- Development of an exterior plaza and improvements to the college's atrium. The atrium improvements will focus on upgrading existing spaces to provide long-term, secure display of student and faculty work. The improvement also will upgrade design project review areas.
- Creation of in-studio computing areas, a distance education facility and an Office of Information Technology designed for faculty development. These improvements will enhance the faculty and student use and development of computer-aided design programs and information-based technologies, said Engelbrecht. Some new computer areas also will be incorporated within space that Design utilizes in the Armory, a building near the college.
- Construction of additional studio and shop space, and development of electronically enhanced graduate studios clustered around a new college Visualization Laboratory.
