ISU RANKS NINTH IN GENDER EQUITY EFFORTS
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State ranks ninth among Division I-A schools in a recent survey measuring efforts to achieve equity for women's sports. The Women's Sports Foundation of New York recently released the results of a national survey measuring four primary areas of Title IX compliance:
-- Participation rates and scholarship comparisons for men's and women's programs relative to overall undergraduate enrollment percentages at respective institutions; the percentage of a department's recruiting budget designated for women's and men's sports and the overall budgeted allocations for men's and women's sports at each institution.
Iowa State's overall B grade placed it ninth out of the 103 Division I-A schools (out of 107 institutions) that responded to the national survey. Among schools whose undergraduate student body is at least 40 percent female, ISU ranked fourth nationally out of 98 schools.
Iowa State received B+ marks for its female student-athlete participation rate and its percentage of scholarships allocated to women's athletes. ISU received B- marks for its recruiting budget allocations and its overall athletic budget allocations for women's sports.

Since the 1992-93 academic year, the operating budgets of women's sports at Iowa State have increased 72 percent. Women's operating budgets have increased more than $400,000 over this period, from 21 percent of overall operating expenditures to 29 percent.
Over the same period, the athletic department has built up support services that will aid future athletic participation increases, particularly in women's sports. ISU official anticipate an increase in participation in women's athletic teams as the women's soccer program, begin in 1995, reaches full maturity.
