Rain reduces parking at Saturday's football game

Cyclone fans who normally park in public, unpaved lots should consider making other arrangements this homecoming weekend.

Continued rainfall has left large portions of the grass lots unsuitable for parking at this Saturday's game. Public parking near the stadium could be reduced by half or more -- a loss of approximately 2,000 parking spaces is possible. University officials are hopeful that some cars still can be accommodated, but it is unlikely RVs and tailgate buses will be able to park on the grass.

Public parking north of Center Drive in the Iowa State Center lots will be reserved for special events and the Iowa State volleyball match at the complex.

There are no changes to donor or Cyclone Club parking, nearly all of which is paved.

Other parking options

Director of Public Safety Jerry Stewart says fans coming to the 6 p.m. game against Texas A&M should allow extra time to safely and legally park. The following options should be considered:

  • Parking for RVs and buses in public lots is discouraged. Drivers of those vehicles likely will be directed to hard surface areas near the College of Veterinary Medicine complex.
  • Ample parking is available on central campus. The following lots can accommodate a number of cars and are within walking distance: Lot 100 (Lied Recreation Center); East Campus Parking Deck (Union Drive); and Memorial Union Parking Ramp (regular hourly rates apply). Parking is allowed in any general (yellow) or reserved (red) lots, except in areas designated as loading zones, handicapped areas, or 24-hour reserve spaces.
  • People parking in the northwest quadrant of campus may elect to ride CyRide's blue route, which will make pickups along Pammel Drive and deliver passengers to Lincoln Way and Beach Avenue. Buses will run every 10 minutes before the game and as needed after. Bus fare is $1.
  • Carpooling is strongly encouraged.

Officials were required to enact similar public parking restrictions at last year's homecoming due to rains that occurred days prior to the game.
