Statement from Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy

Iowa State University sophomore Abel Bolanos is in our thoughts and in our hearts today as the search for him continues. Abel is a member of our university family, and his disappearance has left a void that cannot be filled until he is found. We continue to do everything possible to locate Abel and to offer support to his immediate family and friends during this very difficult time.

The university is investing all available resources to solve this young man's disappearance. We are fully committed to bringing him home safely.

We are all very concerned for Abel's well-being. He has not communicated with family, friends or co-workers, and we don't believe he is dressed for the cold weather of the past few days.

Police do not have reason to suspect foul play at this time, but as always, we ask that students, faculty and staff be aware of their surroundings when walking late at night. Put safety first. Travel in groups and stay away from remote areas. Look out for yourselves and each other.

I want to thank the ISU Police and many departments throughout the university for their ongoing dedication to this effort since receiving the initial report on Sunday. They continue to work around the clock with other state and local law enforcement agencies, the Civil Air Patrol, and the STAR 1 Search and Rescue team to investigate any and all leads. We are interested in any information that can help us locate Abel. I also want to express my appreciation to the many volunteers who are knocking on doors, posting fliers and assisting the trained search teams in their tireless efforts.

Extensive searches continue to be conducted on campus and in the Ames area.

As there are developments, we will continue to provide you with updates. In the meantime, please keep Abel Bolanos and his family in your prayers and join with us in hope that he will return home soon.
