Ames Lab researchers rethink zinc
Ames Lab physicists Paul Canfield and Sergei Bud'ko have discovered a new family of zinc compounds that can be tuned, or manipulated, to take on some of the physical properties and behavior of other materials.
News conference to announce grant for biorenewables research program
Iowa State University and an international energy company will announce a multi-million dollar grant that will expand the university's biorenewables research. A news conference will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Rooms 167-179 of the Scheman Building at the Iowa State Center.
Runners, eaters to make strides together during ISU fundraiser
The ISU Triathlon Club is holding its sixth annual Donut Run April 15 at 9 a.m. at Brookside Park, in Ames. The event is a fund-raiser to help defray costs so the club can compete in the Collegiate National Championship Triathlon in Alabama.
First study reporting chimps using caves authored by ISU anthropologist
ISU Assistant Professor of Anthropology Jill Pruetz authored a paper titled "Evidence of Cave Use by Savanna Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) at Fongoli, Senegal: Implications for Behavioral Thermoregulation," which is the first study to document regular chimpanzee cave use.
Forget 'the talk' -- ISU researcher recommends regular dialogue with kids about sex
ISU Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies Ronald Werner-Wilson studied teens, their parents and sex for his book and two related papers published in professional journals. He advises parents to have an ongoing dialogue with their children about sexuality -- a long process that should begin much earlier than the teen years.

College of Veterinary Medicine earns full accreditation status
Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine has been granted full accreditation status by the Council On Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The accreditation covers the complete academic program including the addition of a new professional program in veterinary medical education being offered with the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL).
Students create furniture from tree felled by 2005 campus tornado
Some Iowa State University furniture design students and their professor have created furniture from a historic tree downed by a tornado that hit campus in 2005. The sculptural furniture is being used in the new Christian Petersen Art Museum.

ISU veterinary lab investigates pet deaths

Suspicious pet deaths are under investigation at ISU's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Some could have been caused by a toxin, perhaps from recalled pet food, said Patrick Halbur, professor and chair of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine.

Ladybug taint: Not fine in wine

The odor produced by ladybugs as a defense mechanism is increasingly being found in wines. "Even tiny amounts can be detected by the human nose," says Jacek Koziel, assistant professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State. Koziel and his team's study of "ladybug taint" was presented at last week's national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
