Media Advisory: ISU architecture students demonstrate motion machines Monday

Media are invited to attend an architecture class in which second-year students will wear and demonstrate their motion machines -- portable, mechanical devices that translate a selected bodily motion onto an architectural surface. The class will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 6 in the atrium of the Design Building, Iowa State University.

In the past, students have designed a machine based on making a fist, a pendulum expressing the movement of speed skating and a device adapting the motion of undressing. A photo of a previous student wearing his "pumping machine" is attached.

Two demonstrations will occur simultaneously. More than 20 students in groups of two and three have been working on their motion machines for the past month. The project helps students learn how bodies move or work in space. It also helps them develop knowledge of architectural materials and methods of construction.
