Iowa State textile and clothing students to participate in Red Event fund-raiser

AMES, Iowa -- Six students from Iowa State University's textiles and clothing program will participate in The Red Event fund-raiser at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, in the center court area of Jordan Creek Town Center, West Des Moines. The event will benefit women's heart education programs at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.

The shopping center-sponsored event is free and open to the public. It will feature a fashion show including Iowa State students' red dress designs along with spring wear from shopping center businesses. Wine and cheese will be served. The center is raising money and awareness for Mercy's women's heart disease programs by selling red dress shaped pins.

Iowa State students participating in the event are:

• Brenda Ackerman, graduate student in textiles and clothing, Ames. She designed a red dress with cowl drapes in front and back.
• Rachel MacClure, senior in apparel merchandising, design and production, Hornick. She designed a gathered front red dress with fabric-fringed bottom.
• JiHye Calista Yoo, Hanam Kyungki, South Korea. Yoo designed a red bustier top with flounced skirt.
• Jessica Havlicek, graduate student in textile and clothing, Solon. She designed a hand-dyed, shibori pleated dress.
• Rachel Kerrigan, senior in apparel merchandising, design and production, Afton. She designed a 1950s inspired short dress with over skirt.
• Katie Adam, senior in apparel merchandising, design and production, Ames. Adam designed a dark red, silk charmeuse dress with tucks.

The garments will be judged by three local media personalities. The dresses then will be on display in the center court area of the shopping center through February. Jordan Creek will award the student with the winning design a $500 scholarship.

The Red Event is part of a larger campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health to focus attention on heart disease, which is the number one killer of women. The national program debuted in February 2005 in New York and featured the red dress designs of Oscar de la Renta, Tommy Hilfiger and Carolina Herrera.
