Iowa State pitcher named National Player of the Week
AMES, Iowa -- Shane Hansmeier of the Iowa State University Baseball Club was named National Player of the Week last week by the National Club Baseball Association.
Hansmeier earned the award by pitching seven scoreless relief innings in a 14-inning, five-hour game against the University of Northern Iowa on March 25. Hansmeier struck out 12 batters, allowed just two hits and gave up two walks to earn the win.
Hansmeier, a junior from Clear Lake majoring in Health and Human Performance, sent his record to 2-0 with the win.
"It felt good to get the honor," said Hansmeier. "But it's just one week in a long season."
The club has fall and spring schedules and plays home games at Cap Timm Field at Iowa State's Southwest Athletic Complex.
Andrew Vogel of Iowa State was named Player of the Week for the Central States North Region, hitting a bases-clearing double to tie the score in the UNI game and getting the game-winning hit in the 14th inning.
The National Club Baseball Association is composed of 130 non-varsity college baseball teams from 37 states. Each week it honors players from each of its eight regions and one position player and one pitcher nationally.
