Latino and higher education studies scholar named chair of department of educational leadership and policy studies at Iowa State
AMES, Iowa -- A nationally known scholar of Latino and higher education studies has been named department chair for educational leadership and policy studies in Iowa State University's College of Education.
Laura Rendon, the Veffie Milstead Jones Endowed Chair in the College of Education at California State University, Long Beach, will assume her new position July 1. She will visit campus March 23-25 to meet the university community.
"Laura is a leading scholar in the areas of social justice and diversity," said Jerry Thomas, interim dean of the College of Education. "We look forward to the leadership that she will provide in educational leadership and policy studies as we combine into the College of Human Sciences on July 1."
At Cal State, Rendon holds appointments in the educational psychology, administration and counseling and teacher education departments. Her research focuses on higher education and educational access for people of color, the role of community colleges, and partnerships that support students' transitions from community colleges to four-year institutions. Her latest work concentrates on higher education and spirituality.
From 1991 to 1999, Rendon was a professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Arizona State University, Tempe. She also has served as a senior research associate at the National Center for Postsecondary Teaching, Learning and Assessment, at Pennsylvania State University, State College.
Rendon received a bachelor's degree in English and journalism from the University of Houston, Texas; a master's degree in guidance, counseling and psychology from Texas A&M University, Kingville; and a doctor of philosophy degree in higher education administration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Rendon succeeds John Schuh, Distinguished Professor in Education. Schuh became chair of the department in 1997. He will continue his research and teaching responsibilities.
"John Schuh has provided outstanding leadership for the department of educational leadership and policy studies over the past several years, while continuing to provide superb research," said Thomas. "As a member of the faculty, he will continue to deserve our highest esteem."
