ISU state fair exhibit features gardens
Iowa State University is bringing a Reiman Gardens-style oasis to the state fair this year. The university exhibit will be on the northeast end of the Varied Industries Building.
Orchestra on central campus Saturday night
The Central Iowa Symphony, conducted by ISU orchestra conductor Jim Hannon, will perform a free summer pops concert July 30 (7 p.m., central campus, north of campanile). Selections will be from blockbuster movies, including The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and the Harry Potter films.
Search committee formed for selection of ag dean
A 21-member committee is beginning the search for the new dean of Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. The search committee is chaired by Labh Hira, dean of the College of Business. Hira said the committee's goal is to name a new dean by the first of the year.
Solar car finishes third in its class
Iowa State's student-built solar car did Austin to Calgary in 71.5 hours, good for a third place finish in its class.

Researchers paper in 'Nature' details genetic origins of corn on cob
Iowa State faculty member Erik Vollbrecht, along with lead researcher Robert Martienssen of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, have determined a genetic reason why modern corn's straight rows and compact ears evolved from corn's wild ancestor, teosinte.

Patrick Schnable has been appointed associate director of the Plant Sciences Institute. Schnable has been active in the Plant Sciences Institute since its establishment in 1999.

Summertime for Southeast Polk High School science teacher Kevin Schulte (right) means learning the 'tools of the trade' in plant biotechnology research. He's spending seven weeks in Pat Schnable's maize genomics lab under the mentorship of Lois Girton (left) as part of a National Science Foundation summer program for biology teachers. Schulte says the research experience has sparked his creativity, triggering ideas for class activities. Nine Iowa teachers are participating this summer at Iowa State.

Too few vets work in crucial research

A report by the National Academy of Sciences warns the U.S. faces a critical shortage of research veterinarians. Dr. James Roth says ISU's College of Veterinary Medicine is trying to address the shortage by encouraging undergraduates to work in research laboratories during the summer, with the hope they'll consider research as a career. Roth is Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor in Veterinary Medicine and director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health.
