ISU announces new 'Return to Iowa' scholarship program

Prospective Iowa State freshmen and transfer students who live out of state may qualify for a new, $1,500 renewable scholarship if they have family ties to ISU.

Service for Kelly Laughery Dec. 7

The funeral service for an ISU student killed in an apparent hit-and-run accident last Saturday will be held in Fontanelle on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The service for Kelly Jean Laughery, 20, will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 424 Scott St. Visitation will be held at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, and earlier that day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Steen Funeral Home, 525 Maple.

Vehicle involved in hit-and-run found

ISU Police have located the vehicle involved in an apparent hit-and-run accident that occurred on the morning of Dec. 3. That accident resulted in the death of Kelly Jean Laughery, who had been walking along Mortensen Road at the time she was struck.

A new Iowa State University research center will bring together scientists and engineers to study how weather impacts transportation systems. That could lead to better and safer ways to travel when weather is a problem.

New risk assessment course among the first

Iowa State is among the first in the nation to offer a course in risk assessment for the biological sciences. The course teaches students how to interpret the risk of adverse incidents in such situations as transgenic contamination, the occurrence of salmonella in food and other agricultural or biological situations.

Students leading Veishea 2006 plans have announced that "Celebrate Iowa State" is the theme for next year's event, set for April 21-23. Jack M. Payne, vice president for University Extension at Utah State University, Logan, has been named vice provost for Extension and outreach at Iowa State. He will begin his duties Jan. 15.

Geoffroy announces Veishea '06 alcohol policy

President Gregory Geoffroy has announced that next year's Veishea celebration will follow the university's standard alcohol policy. That policy permits alcohol on campus, including residence hall rooms, for students who are of legal drinking age.
