Search committee formed for selection of ag deanA 21-member committee is beginning the search for the new dean of Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. The search committee is chaired by Labh Hira, dean of the College of Business. Hira said the committee's goal is to name a new dean by the first of the year. Nichols will resign his post as executive director of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, to become a special assistant to Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy and lecturer in a university department. NASA grant promotes science, tech educationNASA has awarded $1.2 million to an Iowa State program with a record of increasing the number of minority and disadvantaged students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Schnable appointed PSI associate directorPatrick Schnable has been appointed associate director of the Plant Sciences Institute. Schnable has been active in the Plant Sciences Institute since its establishment in 1999.  Summer school for science teachersSummertime for Southeast Polk High School science teacher Kevin Schulte (right) means learning the 'tools of the trade' in plant biotechnology research. He's spending seven weeks in Pat Schnable's maize genomics lab under the mentorship of Lois Girton (left) as part of a National Science Foundation summer program for biology teachers. Too few vets work in crucial researchThe Des Moines Register A report by the National Academy of Sciences warns the U.S. faces a critical shortage of research veterinarians. Dr. James Roth says ISU's College of Veterinary Medicine is trying to address the shortage by encouraging undergraduates to work in research laboratories during the summer, with the hope they'll consider research as a career. Roth is Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor in Veterinary Medicine and director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health. |
