Iowa State University students float on concrete

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University's concrete canoe team proves that concrete can float.

As the team prepares for regional competition later this month, it will make two public demonstrations of the concrete canoe it has named "Swashbuckler."

• At 3 p.m., Sunday, April 17, at Ada Hayden Heritage Park in Ames the team will work through its final paddling practice before the competition.
• At 6 p.m., Thursday, April 21, in 1213 Hoover Hall, the team will present information about this year's project, acknowledge the leaders of the team, present next year's team captains and demonstrate the presentation team members will make at the regional competition.

The 2005 Mid-West Regional Concrete Canoe Competition will be in Platteville, Wis., Saturday, April 23. The competition features team presentations about the canoes, aesthetic judging of the canoes and races. The races begin at 1 p.m. at Blackhawk Lake near Platteville. There will be men's, women's, and coed sprint and endurance races.
