ISU professor receives top civil engineering award

AMES, Iowa -- Radhey Sharma, assistant professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at Iowa State University, has been awarded the prestigious Telford Medal by the Institute of Civil Engineers.

Sharma received the award for a paper he authored on the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of unsaturated soils. The paper appeared in the journal Geotechnique.

Sharma is an international expert on unsaturated soils and their role in landslides and the failures of foundations and highway embankments.

A native of India, Sharma has been an ISU faculty member since 2003. He has served on the faculties of the University of Bradford, England, and Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Penn. Sharma earned degrees from Aligargh Muslim University, Indian Institute of Technology, Imperial College, London and University of Oxford, England. Sharma also has worked as an civil and environmental engineer in India, including a stint with the Central Pollution Control Board in Delhi.

The Telford Medel is the highest award presented by the Institute of Civil Engineers.
