Iowa League of Cities honors two Iowa State faculty members

AMES, Iowa -- Two Iowa State University faculty members were inducted into the Iowa League of Cities Hall of Fame recently for their service to local governments. The league is a municipal advocacy and training organization based in Des Moines.

Jack Whitmer, emeritus associate professor of political science, and Paul Coates, associate professor of political science, were honored for their roles with the Iowa Municipal Clerks' Institute and Iowa Municipal Clerks' Academy.

Whitmer created the two ISU Extension programs in 1975 to provide clerks experience in areas such as city budgeting and financing, communications, record keeping, ordinance development, community development, intergovernmental relations and technology. Clerks train in the institute and then move on to advanced study in the academy.

As director of the Office of State and Local Government Programs for ISU Extension, Coates coordinates the Iowa Municipal Clerks' institute and academy. He is responsible for coordinating outreach education to Iowa state and local governments and units, in addition to his research duties.

The Iowa Municipal Finance Officers' Association and the Iowa League of Cities also support the institute and academy.
