Glatz named interim Engineering dean at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University Provost Benjamin Allen has appointed Charles Glatz, professor and chair of chemical engineering, as interim dean of the College of Engineering through Dec. 31, 2004.

He replaces James Melsa, who retired June 30. Mark Kushner, Founder Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will become permanent dean of ISU's College of Engineering on Jan. 1, 2005.

"Dr. Glatz is respected across campus as a very effective administrator, and he has provided significant service to his profession and ISU," Allen said.

Glatz is nationally recognized for bioseparation research - specifically, the extraction and purification of biopharmaceuticals from plants such as corn. Such technologies can help to create new drugs, health supplements and industrial enzymes.

An ISU faculty member since 1975, Glatz was presented with the College of Engineering's Boylan Award for Outstanding Research in 2003, and was recognized with the college's Oustanding Teacher Award in 1990. Glatz has served as an honorary research fellow at the University of Hull and University College, London; and as a visiting professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He was named a distinguished scientist by the Iowa Academy of Sciences in 1997.

Glatz earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind., in 1971; and a doctoral degree in chemical engineering in 1975 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
