Geoffroy will ask Regents to approve college combination at ISU

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy today (Dec. 13) announced that he will recommend that the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approve a plan to combine the colleges of Family and Consumer Sciences and Education into a new college that would be named the College of Human Sciences.

Geoffroy is submitting his recommendation with the expectation that the Regents will consider the issue at their meeting Dec. 15-16 at Iowa State.

"This new college will retain all of the academic programs of the two existing colleges, and we plan to add faculty and provide new interdisciplinary opportunities for our students," Geoffroy said.

"The plan I'm submitting has the support of the faculty in the two colleges and was recommended by the Faculty Senate. While I understand concerns expressed about the recommended name of the new college, I'm confident we can address them through effective communications and other steps. Human Sciences appropriately describes the mission of the new college, and it is a name that increasingly is accepted nationally."

Geoffroy proposed the college combination one year ago, and committees of faculty and staff from the two colleges conducted an extensive study before voting for the combination. If approved by the Regents, the new college would begin operations July 1, 2005.
