AMES, Iowa -- Tony Smith, professor of philosophy and religious studies, has been named chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Iowa State University.

A faculty member at Iowa State since 1980, Smith replaces Michael Bishop, who has accepted a faculty position at Northern Illinois University.

His areas of specialization include social and political philosophy and the philosophy of technology.

A 1974 graduate of Boston College, Smith also holds a doctorate degree in philosophy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
