IOWA STATE RESEARCHER PUBLISHED IN CURRENT ISSUE OF 'NATURE'
AMES, Iowa -- Keith Adams, a postdoctoral research associate at Iowa State University, has co-authored a paper in the July 10 issue of the international journal "Nature."
Adams is one of four authors of, "Widespread horizontal transfer of mitochondrial genes in flowering plants." The paper is based on research conducted while Adams was a doctoral student at Indiana University.
Horizontal gene transfer -- the exchange of genes across mating barriers -- is recognized as a major force in bacterial evolution. What's new about the research findings by Adams and his colleagues is the transfer of protein coding genes between two different plants.
