AMES, Iowa -- Miyoung Jeong, an Iowa State University assistant professor of hotel, restaurant and institution management in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, has been awarded one of three grants from the 2002-2003 Big XII Faculty Fellowship program administered through Iowa State's Office of the Provost.

The fellowship allows an Iowa State faculty member to travel to another Big XII institution to exchange ideas and research. With the award of approximately $1,500, Jeong will work with Ki-Joon Back at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. Both instructors are developing curriculum materials using the new HOTS hotel simulation software used in advanced lodging courses.

"The HOTS simulation software is used by many hotels and other businesses for employee training," Jeong said. "Both Dr. Back and I will be introducing the software to our respective courses spring semester. Collaborating provides an opportunity for us to share information and teaching platforms to benefit students at both universities."

Jeong said the HOTS software is used by the lodging and restaurant industries to teach decision-making skills and provide experience in strategic management.

"The students will benefit by having hands-on experience before they enter the business world," Jeong said. "The students will understand the way the software runs and the types of case-based simulations that employers will expect them to be able to model."

Jeong, who came to ISU in 1998 from the University of Mississippi, Oxford, Miss., researches information quality on the Web and the effectiveness of Web advertising for the hospitality industry, strategic hospitality information management, hospitality operations research, computer-integrated hospitality operations and Web-based instruction, and value-added information systems and customers' information search behavior.
