ISU TO CELEBRATE 'FRIENDS OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN' ANNIVERSARY
AMES, Iowa -- The 30th anniversary of the Friends of International Women organization will be celebrated at Iowa State University on Monday, April 23.
The event will be in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union at 4 p.m. It is sponsored by the University Committee on Women , Margaret Sloss Women's Center and International Education Services.
Friends of International Women is a volunteer organization that serves international students and visiting scholars and their families. It was created by several campus groups and originally named "Friends of Foreign Wives." The organization provides the Ames newcomers with an opportunity to establish social networks that can become their major support systems. These networks help international students and their families become acclimated to a new cultural environment, practice English skills and access social services.
Speakers at the event include Rollin Richmond, provost; Judy Dolphin, director of the ISU YWCA; Dennis Peterson, director of International Education Services; and Laura Hamilton, Ames community volunteer and Iowa State alumna. Hamilton was recently honored as a Strong Minded Woman by the Catt Center for Women and Politics for her leadership of the Friends of International Women.
Child-care will be provided for guests at the celebration.
