AMES, Iowa -- Elaine Hieber, senior associate athletics director and senior women's administrator at Iowa State University, will serve as interim director of athletics at Iowa State, effective Aug. 11.

The appointment was announced today by Murray Blackwelder, Iowa State vice president for External Affairs. Gene Smith, athletics director at Iowa State since 1993, is leaving to become athletics director at Arizona State University.

"Elaine is an experienced athletics administrator who is respected not only among her colleagues at Iowa State, but also in the Big 12 Conference and across the nation. We are fortunate to have such a capable leader and a strong administrative team in athletics," Blackwelder said.

Hieber was named assistant director of athletics in August 1979, and promoted to associate athletics director in 1990. As senior athletics director her responsibilities include internal operations, overseeing student services, compliance, media relations and human resources. Hieber served as chairperson of the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee for six years, was a member of the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee for six years and served on the NCAA Basketball Marketing Committee. Hieber has served on the executive board of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and was a member of the Governor's Council on Sport and Physical Fitness. She received the ISU Professional and Scientific Excellence Award in 1990.

Blackwelder also announced that Pete Taylor, associate athletics director, will serve as interim senior associate athletics director. He also will serve as interim director of men's football and basketball operations. Taylor has been at Iowa State since 1990, serving the past five years as associate athletics director for external affairs. The radio play-by-play voice of Iowa State athletics for 30 years, Taylor has served as the director of athletic fundraising, worked with the Cyclone Club and coordinated various department radio and television contractual negotiations.

The search for a permanent athletics director will begin this month. James Melsa, dean of the College of Engineering, will chair the search committee. Members of the search committee will be announced soon.
