Author Adrienne Rich to speak at Iowa State on Sept. 22

AMES, Iowa -- Award-winning author Adrienne Rich will speak at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in the Memorial Union Great Hall at Iowa State University. The event is free and open to the public.

Rich is an award-winning writer, poet and feminist icon. Through literature and creative writing, her writings and poetry focus on gender and gay studies. Rich's new book, "Telephone Ringing in the Labyrinth," is a collection of her most recent poems focusing on diverse issues including war, memory in history and aging.

Rich has said that her poetry seeks to create a dialectical relationship between "the personal, or lyric voice, and the so-called political -- really, the voice of the individual speaking not just to herself, or to a beloved friend, but to and from a collective, a social realm."

She is the author of more than 16 volumes of poetry including "Diving into the Wreck," "The Dream of a Common Wreck," "Midnight Salvage," "Fox" and "The School Among the Ruins." She is the author of five non-fiction books such as "Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution," "What is Found There: Notebooks on Poetry and Politics" and "Arts of the Possible: Essays and Conversations."

Since 1951 Rich has received numerous honors and awards, including the Yale Younger Poets Award, Lannan Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, a MacArthur Fellowship, the National Book Award, the Bollingen Prize for Poetry, and the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities, the Iowa State Creative Writing Program, English and Goldtrap Lecture Fund, English Club, George Gund Fund, LAS Miller Lecture Fund, Margaret Sloss Women's Center, Iowa State Women's Studies Program, YWCA Ames-ISU, and Committee on Lectures.
