Purdue dean is finalist in provost search

AMES, Iowa -- Jeffrey S. Vitter, dean of the College of Science at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., will interview on campus Sept. 19-20 for the executive vice president and provost position.

Vitter has been the Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science and professor of computer science at Purdue since 2002.

Prior to that, he was at Duke University, Durham, N.C., where he chaired the department of computer science (1993-2001) and served as the Lehrman Professor of Computer Science (1993-2002). He also was the co-director and founding member of Duke's Center for Geometric and Biological Computing (1997 to 2002).

From 1980 to 1993, Vitter was on the faculty of Brown University, Providence, R.I., advancing to the rank of professor.

He received the B.S. in mathematics (1977) from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.; the Ph.D. in computer science (1980) from Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.; and the M.B.A. (2002) from Duke University.

Open forums

Vitter will participate in two open forums on campus Sept. 19. A general forum will be held from 1:45 to 2:50 p.m. in the Memorial Union Gallery. A forum focusing on diversity issues will be held from 3:50 to 4:40 p.m. in the Gallery.

Former ISU provost Benjamin Allen left Iowa State last May to become president of the University of Northern Iowa. Associate provost Susan Carlson is serving as interim provost.
