Knapp-Storms Implosion
MEDIA GUIDELINES

Parking

Media parking will be provided in Lot 61A southeast of the Towers. Media should enter from the east and follow Mortensen Road westbound. The driveway leading into the media parking lot is the first right (north) turn after the corner of Mortensen and Ash. University Relations staff will be on hand to direct you and provide media badges.

Live trucks will be parked on the north side of the lot. Other media cars and SUVs will be parked on the south side of the lot.

Media viewing area

The media viewing area is in the recreational field directly east of Wallace Hall. This is just northeast of Lot 61A, where you'll park. This is the closest viewing area available.

Camera platforms

Two, 40-foot flatbed trucks (four feet high) will be available in the media viewing area for use as camera platforms - first come, first served.

Live video pool feed

At least six cameras will be used to film the implosion. One of those angles will be made available to you via a live, composite signal pool feed. The pool feed will be provided near the media platform (flatbed trucks), and stations will be responsible for connecting at that point.

Footage from the additional angles will be taped. However, Iowa State will not receive that tape from the vendor until the week following the event. If you have interest in licensing additional video at that time, call Annette Hacker at (515) 294-3720.

FAA restrictions

The Federal Aviation Administration has declared a "no fly zone" within a minimum one-mile radius and = mile vertical above the Towers. Similar rules apply during home football games. (The anticipated flight restriction will be 1 NM radius and 3,000' AGL.)

Filming from the Jack Trice Stadium Press Box

Media outlets that wish to shoot the implosion from the top of the press box will be allowed to do so. This angle is partially obscured by trees (i.e., only the top half of Knapp and Storms will be visible). No tripods with "pointed feet" will be allowed. Arrangements may be made through Erin Rosacker in Athletic Media Relations, (515) 294-5778.

Interviews day-of-event

ISU Project Manager Kerry Dixon-Fox, representatives from Peterson Contractors, Inc. and Controlled Demolition, Inc., and John McCarroll, executive director of University Relations, will be available in the media area approximately 30 minutes following the implosion.

Arrivals

The media lot will open at 4:30 a.m. on July 19. This is the earliest that live trucks may park. You may not park live trucks or any other vehicles in the lot overnight.

Dust

Naturally, you can expect some dust following the implosion. You may want to take any necessary precautions to protect delicate camera equipment.

Pre-registration

E-mail a list of the reporters and photographers from your organization who plan to cover the event to Annette Hacker at annette@iastate.edu no later than July 18 -- the sooner, the better. We will distribute media badges upon your arrival the day of the event. The media viewing area and parking in Lot 61A are reserved for working media. Others will not be admitted. Please have your media credentials or a business card ready to present to staff working in the lot in case there is any question the day of the event.
