MEDIA ADVISORY: ISU hosts economic development open house July 14

Iowa State University is hosting an open house for economic development professionals and company representatives to explore how they can partner with the university to strengthen Iowa's economy.

The Economic Development Open House will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 14, on the Iowa State campus.

News reporters are invited to attend.

More than 100 participants from throughout the state have registered for the event, which is offered free of charge.

"ISU is contributing to Iowa's economic growth by providing a 'system for innovation' that assists economic development and industry professionals in developing products, reducing costs, increasing sales and creating jobs. We want people to know that Iowa State has resources to help in these areas," said Lisa Lorenzen, ISU director of industrial relations.

Concurrent presentations on the university's economic development programs and services will be held in four tracks: advanced manufacturing, life sciences, information solutions and general university overview. The overview includes sessions on how to license new technologies invented by ISU researchers and how to collaborate with the Small Business Development Center.

Tours of campus facilities include biotechnology instrumentation and laboratories, the business and research incubator of the Plant Sciences Institute, the pilot processing facilities in the Center for Crops Utilization Research, and computer and human interfaces that amplify creativity and production in the Virtual Reality Applications Center.

Sessions include:

  • Rhonda Lummus, associate professor of logistics operations and management information systems, will discuss new developments in supply chain management.
  • Ron Cox, director of the Center for Industrial Research and Service, will present information on technical assistance and education for industry and community infrastructure.
  • ISU Extension field specialist Jill Euken will discuss bioproduct and bioenergy production, processing and manufacturing.
  • Max Rothschild, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture, will talk about the Center for Integrated Animal Genomics and how ISU animal science research impacts daily life.
