Overview
This multimedia project was created as part of CI 502 Visual Media
course. The general goal of this project is to enable English as a second
language (ESL) learners to identify plots and main ideas through visual
media such as cartoons, comic strips and digital images.
The target audience is intermediate level ESL learners between 12-16
years old. However, other ESL learners of different levels and age groups
can utilize this unit to complement their classroom learning.
This module is created as a supplementary unit and intended as a self-study
or practice unit. All three reading activities will provide a score
for the learners at the end but teachers will not be able to keep track
of the students' score. Hence, these units should not be used for assessment
purposes. However, teachers may be able to have students use the writing
material to produce a story for their portfolios or as homework or an
in-class contest. Finally, the writing contest has been included to
allow students to see an authentic task and help them to go beyond the
classroom activities.
My hope is for ESL students to improve their visual literacy and to
encourage the love of cartoons and images. I believe that visual media
can be used effectively to help students learn ESL. Also, I believe
that visual media can help to enhance imagination and facilitate creativity.
