THE FOLLOWING NAVY/MARINE CORPS SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE TO A
LIMITED NUMBER OF QUALIFIED APPLICANTS.
1. 4-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP NAVY OPTION
Selected applicants for the NROTC scholarship program are awarded
scholarships through a highly competitive national selection process. The
recipient will be commissioned a Naval officer upon graduation and is obligated
to a minimum of 4 years active duty in the U.S. Navy. The scholarship recipient
will receive full tuition and other financial benefits including books, class
fees and $200 per month subsistence at Iowa State University. NROTC scholarships do not pay for
room and board or personal items such as computers.
Applicants for 4 year
NROTC scholarships must meet the following eligibility requirements:
1.
You must be a U.S. citizen.
2. You must be at least 17 years of age by
September 1 of the year you are starting college and less than 27 years of age
on June 30 of the year in which you are eligible for graduation and commissioned
status. An age waiver may be granted for prior active military service, on a
month-for-month basis, computed as of 1 September of the year of enrollment in
NROTC, provided you will not reach your 30th birthday by 30 June of the year in
which graduation and commissioning are anticipated.
3. You must be a high
school graduate or possess equivalency certificate by August 1 of the year you
are applying.
4. You must have no moral or personal convictions which
prevent the bearing of arms in defense of the United States and you must be
deemed physically qualified.
5. You must meet minimum SAT test scores of
530 verbal and 520 math or minimum ACT test score of 22 in both English and
Math.
6. You are also responsible for gaining acceptance to Iowa State
University. Acceptance does not guarantee assignment to that school, so it
is recommended that you apply to at least 3 of your desired universities that
offer the NROTC program.
Students that have more than 1 year of college credit are
not eligible for the 4-year scholarship and should discuss other options with
the professor of naval science at Iowa State University.
If nominated for a scholarship, you will be required to
complete a medical examination. It is in your best interest to schedule this
physical as soon as possible after you receive your scholarship nomination
letter. You must be found fully medically qualified (or
obtain a waiver) before scholarship benefits are paid. Should you be
found medically disqualified, the scholarship will be rescinded. The medical
qualification process may take a period of time, particularly if there are
medical issues to be reviewed or additional medical tests required. If medical
issues are not resolved before tuition payments are due, you are responsible for
those payments. Should you be subsequently found medically qualified, the Navy
will reimburse you for payments made (for the current semester only). If you are
disqualified due to medical reasons, you will not be reimbursed for any tuition
payments.
2. 4-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP MARINE OPTION
Applicant eligibility requirements for the NROTC scholarship Marine
Option program are the same as Navy 4-year EXCEPT the minimum SAT test scores
are 1000 composite or the minimum ACT test score is a 45 combined score for the English
and Math portions.
3. HOW TO APPLY FOR AN NROTC 4-YEAR
SCHOLARSHIP
Step 1 is to complete the applicant questionnaire
found in the Navy/Marine ROTC College Scholarships Bulletin which is available
at the Armory at Iowa State University or through your local Navy Recruiter or call 1-800-USA-NAVY. Questionnaires should
be submitted to ensure receipt no earlier than March 1 and no later than January
1 of the year you are applying.
Step 2 is to take the SAT or ACT test as
early as possible and release scores directly to the NROTC program by using Code
0656 on the test registration form. (There is no other means of providing the
scores.) The minimum SAT scores are 530 verbal and 520 Math or 1000 composite
for Marine option. The minimum ACT scores are 22 in English as well as Math.
Scores cannot be received before March and will not be considered if received
after December 31.
Step 3 is to apply to at least 3 of the universities
you would like to attend. Acceptance to an NROTC approved college or university
is your responsibility because the NROTC program cannot guarantee acceptance. It
is advisable to apply to your university choices by November 1.
Step 4 is
to contact your local NROTC program coordinator to begin processing your
application. Your coordinator will be identified in a letter indicating you are
"board eligible" based on your questionnaire.
Step 5 is to complete the
application forms booklet with your local recruiting officer by the Jan 25
completion date so that it can be received at the main headquarters by the Jan
31 deadline.
Step 6 will be the consideration of your application by a
selection board which will begin in September and continue meeting periodically
through March.
