The NROTC program at Iowa State University is built around a staff of 5 officers, 3 enlisted, and 2 civilians. It is commanded by a a Marine Colonel. Staff members teach naval science classes including shipboard engineering, ship handling and chart work, amphibious warfare, and leadership and management. Emphasis is place on developing positive, educated, and well-rounded midshipmen.
