FIFTIETH REUNION REPORT

The Fiftieth Reunion in November 2007 has come and gone! A great success thanks to all the work by Nancy Nunnery Brock and her crew. I'll be putting up some reports and photos over the next weeks and adding new material, like pages directly from Orenda '57. Keep checking back from time to time. And, oh yes, missing classmates are still turning up.

There were two events, on Friday and Saturday nights: Friday night a barbecue/dance at the nursery, with live music from the Grateful Geezers, and Saturday night a buffet dinner at the River Oaks Country Club, with DJ dance music.

Tommy Feagins provided the following information about 559 Lamar 1957 High School graduates whose whereabouts are known:
132 or 23.6% live out of state
342 or 61.2% live in the Houston metropolitan area
85 or 15.2% live elsewhere in Texas Out of State 132 23.6 % Houston Metro Area 342 61.2 % Texas 85 15.2 % Classmates 559

  • Did you catch Jim Allison displaying his musical talent on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on December 19, 2005? A little more practice and maybe he can make it to Carnegie Hall?
  • Remember Gail Jordan, Lamar '59? She performed at the Houston Club, often singing with Eddie Gerlach's Orchestra and also with the Roberto Compean Quintet. She passed away in 1997, and her son, Danny Gillespie, is trying to locate records of her singing. If you can help, contact Danny at danny@idealflow.com.
  • Email me (at lhodges@iastate.edu) some information about yourself and what you've been up to the last few decades, and perhaps attach a nice picture of you or your family. See the examples below. If you have your own web site, let us know about it.
  • Do you remember what you looked like October 28, 1956? And who took your picture that day? I've scanned my copy of the panoramic class photograph (in five parts, reassembled but not perfectly).

Click on this photo for an enlarged version.
  • If you can identify yourself or anyone else, let me know. I can email you a higher-resolution jpeg file of yourself and those around you. I am also preparing a list of names by row and position in the row. I'm second from the right at the end of row 2 (counting from the bottom). The twelve rows I will use are marked on this photograph.

40th REUNION REPORT

  • The 40th Reunion - featuring cocktails, buffet, and dancing - took place Saturday night, October 25, 1997, at the River Oaks Country Club Ballroom.
  • A large crowd of Texans and non-Texans showed up. The non-Texans were mainly from the West Coast - not many from the East Coast or the Midwest. Beth Clark Price came all the way from London!
  • Everyone looked great! (Maybe those who don't look great didn't come?) Mature and dignified, for the most part. Sure, the average weight of the class seems to have gone up a few pounds, but many classmates would fit into their 1957 outfits.
  • An incredible number of different occupations and activities: aerospace engineering, architecture, art, chemical engineering, dermatology, graphic art, law, military, physics, surgery, writing, .... Some still active, some retired.

View the non-PC logo

  • A colleague who went to a 40th Reunion in Missouri a few years ago warned me I'd be surprised by how many big egos there'd be, so I was expecting some. I WAS surprised! Zero, as far as I could tell.
  • Thanks to the committee that organized the reunion: Jim Bertrand, Penny Hess Butler, Ernest Conner, Peggy Wheeler Parks, Amy Bradford Ufer, Nancy Nunnery Brock, Colette Lebourg Grinstead, Carolyn Burton Hamilton, Rhetta Duty Davis, Tommy Feagins
  • If you didn't make it and haven't yet contacted the reunion group, email Ernest Conner at ernestc@cyberramp.net.

Bowlin, Kathleen (Kathleen Bowlin Meyer)

Baylor, B.S. in Chemistry - after brief sojourns to U of Houston, and Western Reserve U.

In 1960, married John Paul Meyer. He attended Macalester College in St. Paul, American U., Beirut, Lebanon, and U of Minn., B.A., and Union Theo. Seminary (NYC), B.D. He was ordained an Episcopal priest at St. John Cathedral in NYC.

We thus proceeded to Cleveland OH (Paul born ’61), then to NYC (Erika born ’63) and where John was grad. student at The General Seminary. Then to Alton Ill. (Johanna born ’67), and then to Carbondale Ill. (Karl born ’69) where John served as Episcopal Chaplain at the Univ., for 5 years. There, I served open house dinners once a week, while completing an M.S. from the Nutrition dept., school of Home Ec., at So. Ill. U., Carbondale.

Then on to Geneva, OH (N.E. of Cleveland) and finally to Detroit in 1977.

1984 at Wayne State U., I completed a 2 year undergraduate program (CUP) to become a registered dietitian. I worked for the WIC and the Maternal Child Health programs, and for a couple of years in an out-patient cancer unit at Henry Ford Hosp.

We were drawn to Detroit to be part of an inner city, charismatic, communal, community. An offspring of the Church of the Redeemer in Houston. We remained there only 2 years, but decided to move only across downtown to a historical neighborhood. Where we eventually re-habbed (sp?) an 1885 house where we still reside. In ’79 John began to minister at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, from which he retired in ’02. St. Peter’s also houses the Catholic Worker soup kitchen.

Paul lives in Cabin John Maryland, and presides over the household of his wife, Jennifer O’Connor, partner in a D.C. law firm, and Ian 6 and Dylan 4. He has worked as a programmer analyst; now studying to teach math in high school setting.
Erika is rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Cortez, CO, lives with her son Johann 9. Her husband, Carl Hedlund, (Ph.D. Univ. of Utah) died at age 38, in 2003. Before college he was a diesel mechanic, and did some work on biodiesel fuels.
Johanna is a choreographer and dancer, and earns a living as a Pilates instructor, and is married to writer, actor, Aaron Landsman, who teaches business side of the arts, etc. They live in Brooklyn NY
Karl lives in Brooklyn, and ekes out a living playing his fiddle, wherever, even on the sidewalk.

  • "I have done a number of different things in my checkered career including trading the commodity futures market and computer programming for a lumber wholesaler, 9 years as Educational Technology Consultant for a local school district and most recently Information Systems Purchasing Coordinator for a local brokerage firm. I look forward to retiring in October 2003. At that time I will probably return to volunteering as a docent at Old City Park in Dallas."
  • "I especially enjoyed the information about the faculty on the web site. It is my experience that school as well as corporate culture tends to come from the top. The principal and faculty are responsible for creating and maintaining it. I have friends who don't believe me when I talk about the atmosphere at Lamar when we were there. They remember high school as a place where only athletes, cheerleaders and beauty queens got any respect. I have always remembered Lamar as a place where all talents of whatever kind were appreciated. I wonder whether our classmates have the same recollection, or if I am looking at the past through rose colored glasses. At any rate, I would love to see our class do something in honor of the faculty. Mae Gates was my English teacher for all three years and I remember her fondly. I am trying to get information about H. Lel Red, our math teacher, through the Rice University Historical Society. She was a member of the first graduating class at Rice and like so many of - the faculty at Lamar had taught at Sam Houston High School before Lamar opened. My parents attended the old Sam Houston (Class of 1929). My father had math from Miss Red and took Latin under the legendary Miss Brumby. He said that he was terrified of Miss Brumby. She made him take a fourth year of Latin so her class would make and she could continue with the Latin Debate Society. I would love to hear about Mr. Duggan. Wherever he is, I'm sure he is disappointed in us because we have not re-written the Texas Constitution YET."

Neuhaus, Max . . . Wikipedia article about Max
  • Italian address is Villa Cesina, via Belvedere Cesina 55, I-80073 Capri, Italy
  • New York office (always finds me in the end, but may take a while) is 350 Fifth Avenue, Suite 3304, New York, NY 10118 USA
  • Here is a description of one of Max' works which has become part of the Dia Foundation's collection; they will now maintain it in perpetuity. "Max Neuhaus' work Times Square is located on the pedestrian island formed by the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, between 45th and 46th Streets, in New York City's Times Square. The work consists of an invisible unmarked block of sound which emerges from the grating on the north end of the island.
"The aural and visual environment surrounding this piece is rich and complex. It includes large billboards, moving advertising signs, office buildings, hotels, theaters and electronic game emporiums. Its population is equally diverse including tourists, theatergoers, commuters, shoppers and office workers. Most people are in motion, passing through the square. The island on which the work is located is at the junction of several of the square's pathways and is sometimes crossed by a thousand or more people in an hour. Yet not everyone will be aware of its existence. Its sonority, a rich harmonic sound texture resembling the after-ring of large bells, seems an impossibility within its context. Many who pass through the work will dismiss it as an unusual machinery sound from below ground.
"For those who find and accept the sound's anomaly, however, the island becomes a different place, separate, but including its surroundings. With no indication at the site that this sound has been deliberately made, people are able to claim the work as a place of their 0 own discovering."

Pickle, Linda

Linda Pickle was listed as a member of our class, but we have not found anyone who remembered her. She may have been a student under special circumstances, as suggested by her obituary from the April 15, 2008 Houston Chronicle, given below.

Linda Pickle spent life helping others with disabilities (By Lynwood Abram. Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle)

Linda Pickle, who was stricken with polio at age 16 and was left almost completely paralyzed but devoted her life to helping others with disabilities, died Sunday in a Houston hospital of complications from diabetes. She was 71. "It was a very severe case of polio," said Margaret A. Nosek, executive director of the Center for Research on Women With Disabilities at Baylor College of Medicine. Pickle worked for several years at the center, directing research and conducting workshops for disabled women. "She could move one arm a little bit," Nosek said. "She spent much of her time in an iron lung until a portable ventilator was produced. She used it in a little box on the back of her power wheelchair."

Fundraiser for TIRR

Pickle's limited mobility didn't keep her from being active, Nosek said, even though she required attendants to help with basic tasks. "She never 'suffered' her disability. It was the context within which she lived, and she dealt with it very effectively," Nosek said. "She got up at 5 a.m. to get to work by 8 a.m., and used a wheelchair and a van equipped with a lift. For about 30 years, she was a fundraiser for The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research and for the TIRR Foundation." One of her projects was coordinating the annual TIRR Night at Astroworld for former TIRR patients, Nosek said. Nosek said Pickle raised funds from private sources, including foundations, and produced substantial sums for TIRR. After she retired from TIRR in the 1990s, Pickle joined the Center for Research on Women With Disabilities and later was a community advocate for the Houston Center for Independent Living, where she helped the disabled to move out of nursing homes into the community. An outgoing, cheerful person, Pickle had no difficulties in speaking and worked hard for the disability rights movement, Nosek said.

'Very spiritual'

"She was very active. She was a big fan of the ballet, art festivals, movies and eating shrimp on Galveston beach," Nosek said. "She was a free and independent spirit and very spiritual." Monica Evans, a friend and financial adviser, described Pickle as "strong and determined and a role model for me as a woman who took care of herself and struggled to help others. She did not think of herself as handicapped." Born in Cleburne, Linda Estelle Pickle graduated from high school there and earned a degree in psychology from the University of Houston. She had no immediate family. Survivors include a cousin, Anne Abbas of Dallas; a goddaughter, Katia Villalobos of Houston; and friends and attendants, Norfa Velgar, Irma Thompson, Elvia Villalobos, Laura Lopez and Mita Linares.

Tune, Tommy . . . Wikipedia article about Tommy

  • Star, with Twiggy, of the long-running My One and Only, including an appearance at a Royal Command Performance for Queen Elizabeth II. There is a CD available of the songs from this musical, starring Tommy and Twiggy.
  • Winner of nine Tony Awards, the only person ever to win Tonys in four different categories, the only person ever to win the same two Tonys two years in a row:
    • 1974: Best Actor, Supporting or Featured, in a Musical (Seesaw)
    • 1979: Best Choreographer (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas)

Tommy Tune sings 16 songs on his CD, Slow Dancin'. I located it under "T" in the Easy Listening section at our local Best Buy store. It's RCA Victor 09026-68322-2. Another good CD with Tommy is the original cast album for "My One and Only" (Tommy Tune and Twiggy), from Atlantic records.

Tommy Tune's autobiography, Footnotes: *a Memoir, was published by Simon & Schuster. I read it in two sittings and found it fascinating. Lamar gets one direct mention and some indirect ones, and among the many pictures of Tommy is one with Ruth Denney. "I'm a big believer in Circle and have been ever since I was introduced to it by my high school drama teacher Ruth Denney. Before every performance Ms. Denney instructed us to join hands in a big circle, thereby literally connecting the cast members into one divine human form. She'd have good words of positive encouragement to say to us, and if there was a weak link in the chain it would be strengthened. I've continued making Circle since high school and have found that it really works to align a cast..."

"Just about every other generation someone comes along and revivifies and revitalizes the American musical theater. This generation that someone is you, Mr. Tune. All of your colleagues admire your artistry, skill, and professionalism, but we admire more your gentleness and kindness to the talents with whom you work. God bless you, Tommy Tune." - Gene Kelly, in his final public appearance, presenting Tune with the Pinnacle Award.

Tommy Tune and the Manhattan Rhythm Kings has been on tour recently.
