Welcome to the Spring of 2006
edition of the CSNA Newsletter!
The 2006 CSNA meeting will occur at the DIMACS Center at Rutgers
University, May 10-13, 2006. The meeting will overlap with the DIMACS
workshop on Clustering Problems in Biological Networks May 9 - 11,
2006. We hope that many of you will be able to attend the CSNA meeting and
that several of you will also take advantage of hte DIMACS workshop.
The IFCS meeting will be in Slovenia in July. Buck McMorris was
elected President-Elect of the IFCS!
There are significant member benefits for being a member in CSNA. See
details in the newsletter below.
As always, suggestions, comments, and news items are welcome.

This meeting will be held partly was a joint meeting with the DIMACS
workshop on Clustering Problems in Biological Networks May 9 - 11,
2006. The Institute for Mathematical Statistics is a cosponsor of the
meeting.
FYI: CSNA had a very nice eye-catching ad on page 3 of the January, 2006
issue of SIAM News (volume 39, No. 1). The circulation is around
10,000. They also have this on their web site -- http://www.siam.org/news/calendar.php.
Publisher booths at CSNA meeting: Taylor and Frances will have
a booth at the CSNA meeting, and will be offering a 20% discount on
books. At the Springer booth the 33% discount will be valid for
CSNA members who have paid current dues and 20% for all others.
33% for all in April, May, and June!!!
Dear CSNA members,
Here's
another great benefit of CSNA membership:
For the
months of April, May, and June, paid-up CSNA members can buy Springer books at a
deeper, 33% discount. (The 20% discount will still be available after
that.) Many thanks to John Kimmel, Springer's Executive Editor for
Statistics and "CSNA's man" at Springer, for arranging this !
We must emphasize that this discount is a benefit of CSNA
membership and is not to be used by non-members. We
will be using this benefit as an inducement to join CSNA. This
additional perk will be advertised to potential members, but they will not
be given the discount code until they join CSNA.
This is to inform you that the IFCS election round 2005/2006 has ended
with the following results:
- F.R. (Buck) McMorris is elected to be the new IFCS President-Elect;
- André Hardy is elected to be the new IFCS Publication Officer;
- Patrick Groenen is elected to be the new member of the IFCS Finance
Committee.
We all look forward to working with them over the coming years.
I am pleased to report that we have completed our negotiations with
SFC (French Classification Society). They will circulate an email in
French to their members announcing the fact that they can join CSNA as
affiliate members at a discount price of $50 this year. This email
will include an attachmenmt outlining the advantages of CSNA
membership, and will also include a CSNA membership form. Bruno
Leclerc will gather up the membership applications for us. SFC members
who have international credit cards will pay us directly. People
without such cards will pay through Bruno. I want to mention that what
made this possible was the existence of the SERVICE CD and the good
will of Bruno, the current SFC President Yves Lechevallier, and the
SFC Board of Directors. I view this as an extremely positive step. --

There is to be a new journal called
Advances in Data Analysis and Classification:
Theory, Methods, and Applications in Data Science . The
founding editors are
Hans-Hermann Bock (Aachen), Wolfgang Gaul (Karlsruhe), Akinori Okada (Tokyo),
and Maurizio Vichi (Rome). See a flyer for more information.
Deadline for Paper Submissions: June 9, 2006.
Submissions are solicited for the twentieth annual meeting of an
interdisciplinary conference (December 5-7) which brings together
researchers interested in all aspects of neural and statistical
processing and computation. The conference will include invited talks
as well as oral and poster presentations of refereed papers. It is
single track and highly selective. Preceding the main conference will
be one day of tutorials (December 4), and following it will be two
days of workshops at Whistler/Blackcomb ski resort (December 8-9).
The paper format is fully described at
nips06.
37th European Mathematical Psychology Group
meeting
in Brest (France) on September 11-13, 2006. See a flyer for more information.
Data Analysis Challenges Arising from the DNA Barcode Initiative
Call for Participation. Data Analysis
Challenges Arising from the DNA Barcode Initiative. The
Challenge: The Data Analysis Working Group (DAWG) of the Consortium for the
Barcode of Life (CBOL) has developed interdisciplinary research challenge
problems in statistics and computer science arising from DNA barcoding, a
method proposed as a tool for differentiating species. Students, postdocs,
and researchers from all over the world are challenged to develop new
approaches to these problems. Compelling solutions to these challenges
will require collaboration among taxonomists, population geneticists,
and evolutionary and systematic biologists, so DAWG encourages
the formation of multidisciplinary teams.
Presenting
Preliminary Ideas at a Workshop in Paris: Preliminary ideas for approaches to these problems
will be discussed at a workshop at the National Museum of Natural History in
Paris on 6-8 July 2006 (see http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/Workshops/DNABarcode/).
Participation in this workshop will be limited to approximately 40 presenters
of preliminary results and attendees who can offer useful feedback to
the presenters. Space will therefore be limited and all those wishing
to participate in the workshop should register at http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/Workshops/DNABarcode/registnew.html
no later than 29 June 2006. However, you are urged to register early as we
will close registration when all spaces are filled.
Travel awards for
a limited number of Europeans who would like to give presentations at this
workshop will be available through funding from the Conservation Genetics
Programme of the European Science Foundation. Travel awards for US
presenters will also be available, pending funding agency approval.
Travel support will focus primarily on increasing the participation of
students, postdocs and junior faculty.
Presenting More Advanced
Results at a Conference in Southeast Asia: The preliminary workshop will be
followed by an international conference in southeast Asia in February 2007,
during which the most promising approaches to these challenge problems will
be presented. Travel awards will also be available (pending funding agency
approval).
For
information about the DNA Barcode Initiative, see: http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/Workshops/DNAInitiative/. ================ Important
dates: Deadline for submission of abstracts: 2 June 2006 Deadline
for submission of requests for travel support: 2 June 2006 Deadline for
registration: 29 June 2006 Announcement of final agenda of presenters,
awards of travel support: as early as possible after 2 June
2006
