Notes from Newsletter Editor

Greetings and Welcome to the Summer of 2005 edition of the CSNA Newsletter!

This newsletter reports on the terrifically successful 2005 joint annual meetings of the CSNA and the Interface Foundation of North America that occured June 8-12 at Washington, University, in St.\ Louis. The Board of Directors of CSNA sincerely thanks Bill Shannon for his organizational efforts and for making the conference a truly enjoyable experience. If you have comments on the conference or suggestions for future conferences, please send email to me or, even better, to the CSNA list server (see this link below).

The newsletter looks ahead to the Joint Statisical Meetings in Minneapolis (August 7-11). We encourage members of CSNA and others interested in classification and clustering to send emails to the CSNA list server (see this link below) to help make others aware of talks and sessions at JSM that might be of particular interest to members of CSNA and receipients of this newsletter.

CSNA has a special offer for all and a special benefit for CSNA members through Springer, the publisher of the Journal of Classification. See below for details.

As always, suggestions, comments, and news items are welcome.

      Best regards,
      Mike

CSNA Annual Conference Information

The Annual CSNA Conference was held in St. Louis from June 8th to June 12th at the Washington University School of Medicine. The meeting was a joint meeting with the Interface Foundation of North America. The organizers were Bill Shannon, David Banks, and Rob Culverhouse. The theme was Classification and Clustering. By all accounts, the conference was a tremendous success. Attendance was very good. Several prominent researchers from a variety of disciplines gave interesting and well prepared key note and invited talks. Several young researchers gave exciting and well prepared invited and contributed talks.

The conference facilities at the Eric P. Newman Education Center at the Washington Unversity School of Medicine were top rate and well suited to the size of our group. The meals and snacks were very nice and more than adequate to keep conference attendees from going hungry. The conference banquet at the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame was a lot of fun. Several conference attendees enjoying testing their skill on the bowling lanes in the lower level of the museum. The updated web site for the conference is
http://ilya.wustl.edu/if_csna_2005_meeting/

where information on invited sessions, short courses, keynote speakers, registration, etc. can be found.

Following is an except from a letter sent to Bill Shannon from the CSNA Board:
     Sent: Friday, June 24, 2005 6:38 PM
     To: shannon
Cc: "CSNA 2005 Board of Directors"; David Banks
Subject: thanks from the CSNA Board

     Dear Bill,

The Board of Directors of CSNA has passed a resolution thanking you
for (again!) organizing a super-excellent meeting. We express our
heartfelt thanks for your hard work.

The joint aspect of the meeting, with the Interface Foundation, was a
huge plus. The invited talks were excellent, as were the short
courses (with you doing yeoman's service and even giving a course
     yourself !).

The venues of EPNEC for the sessions and Parkway Hotel for lodging
     were fine facilities.

     Your efforts were much appreciated.

     Sincerely yours,
     Stan

CSNA's List Server

The CSNA list server list (CLASS-L) is a resource for announcements, queries, and relevant statements about classification and clustering. To quote from the CLASS-L description:
"The purpose of this list is to enable researchers in classification, clustering, phylogeny estimation, and related methods of data analysis to contact other researchers in that area. The list is not limited to members of particular professional societies. "
The address is http://www.classification-society.org/csna/lists.html#class-l. CSNA encourages you to check it out if you are not already receiving email from this list.
