I took over the reins of CSNA on January 1 ... I am grateful to my immediate predecessor David Banks, and to my predecessor's predecessor Stephen Hirtle, as much for their leadership as for keeping CSNA stable and financially in the black. I hope to "pick their brains" over the next two years, or at least until I get "up to speed" with current CSNA issues. I am very glad to see the re-emergence of the CSNA Newsletter, and I commend Jennifer Pittman for all the good work she has put into the two issues that she has produced. I do hope to see the Newsletter appear on a regular basis.

As you know, there is a new CSNA Board of Directors. I thank all the candidates for running for election, and I congratulate our new President-elect, Phipps Arabie, and the two new members of the Board: David Dubin and Herbie Lee. I look forward to working with them over the next two years, as well as with those continuing on the Board. I will miss Bernie Harris and Buck McMorris, whose Board terms expired on January 1. Thanks Bernie and Buck for all the work you have put into CSNA, which I do hope will continue in other capacities.

I am very pleased to see Phipps Arabie continuing on the Board, albeit wearing a different hat. He continues to have much to offer, and will be a great President-elect. His service to CSNA through his editorship of Journal of Classification has been exemplary; I am glad that he will stay around.

Speaking of the Journal, it is time to welcome our new editor, Willem Heiser, University of Leiden. Willem has much editorial experience, including Psychometrika, which he edited in the mid-1990s. I have no doubt that under his leadership, the importance of the Journal will continue. There will be a new Editorial Board, and new financial arrangements (which the Board is just now studying). Willem took over March 1 ... please keep the Journal high on your reading, perusing, and submission lists.

Later in this newsletter you will read about CSNA02, which is happening in Madison in June, and IFCS02, in Cracow in July. I will be at the former meeting, but not the latter. I do hope that CSNA has some representatives in attendance; and let's hope that IFCS04 will be hosted by CSNA! (we are working on this right now).

I look forward to seeing you all in Madison, and to hearing about your research.

Do let me know if you have any thoughts, concerns or ideas, about CSNA. My email address is given above. I would be glad to hear from you.

It has been a great privilege to serve the Classification Society of North America over the last two years. I thank the membership, with humility and pride, for entrusting me with this office.

The greatest thing about the job has been the chance to interact with so many of you. The people are the soul of this society, and members like Gene and Lois Boggess, Greg Constantine, David Wishart, Kevin Lynch, Dawn Iacobucci, Jonathan Robbin, Francois-Joseph Lapointe, David Holmes, Art Kendall, and my new good friend Mark Rorvig show the many axes of activity we share and can enjoy. Someday someone should do a principal components analysis on us, in hopes of finding out how many dimensions are spanned in the society!

The founding members of the CSNA (many of whom are not so old, and few of whom act their age) have built a wonderful organization. The Journal of Classification is our anchor, collegiality is our wind, and the hull is honest science. I thank them for the chance to enjoy the success of their labor: Joe Kruskal, John Hartigan, Herman Friedman, Jim Rohlf, Doug Carroll, Mel Janowitz, Larry Hubert, Phipps Arabie, Buck McMorris, Bill Day, and many others. Their work has set the mark of achievement to which we should all aspire.

For the newer members, the society offers great opportunities. I have been delighted that so many are stepping forward to take up the work, and deeply appreciate the energy and commitment shown by David Dubin, Herbie Lee, Jennifer Pittman, Chris Fraley, Kert Viele, Mike Larsen, Bob Olszewski, and Mike Brusco. These people are smart, professional, and will carry the organization far beyond the original hopes of the founding members.

It is always risky to polytomize a continuous variable. But I shall fully grasp the nettle and thank those in the middle years of their participation. Stephen Hirtle, Fionn Murtagh, Stan Wasserman, Glenn Milligan, Peter Bryant, Pierre Hansen, Bill Shannon, Pascale Rousseau, Boris Mirkin, Pierre Legendre, and Anil Chaturvedi have all contributed magnificently, each in their own ways and in their own domains of expertise, to the continuing success and breadth of our society.

But there are still four people who deserve special gratitude, not just from me but from us all. First and foremost is Stan Sclove---he keeps CSNA running, in ways that are often invisible outside the boardroom. His kind reminders and thoughtful prompting have rescued me repeatedly from oversights and gaffes, and I cannot thank him enough. Similarly, we should all thank Bernie Harris, who stepped up to the plate to organize the 2002 CSNA meeting at nearly the last moment, and is pulling it off brilliantly! And if one reads the fine print in the Journal of Classification, then it is also clear that special thanks are due to Lynne Bilger and Eva Whitmore, the past and present technical editors---without them, Phipps would be far more frazzled, far more often.

The last two years have been busy, but I hope productive. We have a new editor for our journal---Willem Heiser will surely take it in new directions, but I am confident we could have found no better successor to our tradition. Also, we now have slightly higher dues (please accept my sincere apologies; the Board had to pick between fiscal responsibility and crass popularity, and I hope time will show we chose wisely).

There are two problems that remain on CSNA's horizon.

  1. Our membership continues to slowly dwindle---we need to attract more people, and the right kind of people. I ask all of us to make a point of inviting friendly colleagues to attend our meetings.
  2. We have recently had strained relations with some of the other member societies of the International Federation of Classification Societies, and I hope those feathers can be unruffled. CSNA members will gain much from active international scholarship in both the short and the long runs.

So I am very glad that Stan Wasserman has taken over. These are his problems now, but I am sure we shall all share in doing whatever we can to cultivate the success of our society!

Thanks, and best wishes in all things,

    David Banks

RESULTS OF THE ELECTION

The new President-Elect will be Phipps Arabie. The two new members of the Board of Directors will be Dave Dubin and Herbie Lee.

Many thanks to the Nominating Committee, which consisted of Mike Brusco, Chris Fraley, Larry Hubert, David Banks (ex officio) and myself (Chair).

Special thanks to the candidates, Phipps Arabie and Bill Shannon for President-Elect, and Dave Dubin, Herbie Lee, Mark Rorvig, and Kert Viele for members of the Board of Directors.

MUSICAL CHAIRS

Many thanks to Stephen Hirtle, whose term as Past President ends. Stephen continues as Webmaster. Stephen is perhaps the only person who has hosted TWO of our annual meetings!!

Special thanks to David Banks for serving as President; he now moves to Past President.

Welcome to Stanley Wasserman, who moves from President-Elect to President.

To those whose terms as Directors will end, Bernie Harris and Buck McMorris, many thanks for your time and effort.

EXHORTATION

We hope and expect that "retiring" officers will remain especially active, particularly given their experience in helping to run the show. Bernie Harris, of course, will be hosting CSNA2002/Madison. We take this opportunity to thank Bill Shannon again for all his efforts in hosting CSNA2001/St.Louis.

Evolution of Clustering and Classification Research

How often cited are references in the broad area of clustering and classification, including machine learning, neural networks, pattern recognition, spatial statistics, and information retrieval? How is this evolving over time?

The "Classification Literature Automatic Search Service", now in its 30th year, is provided on CD with the first issue each year of the Journal of Classification. From a "profile" of 90 journal articles or books, in 2001 there were 3268 citations to one or more of them.

List (abbreviated) of "profile" literature references follows. The first three columns give number of citations in the Science and Social Science Citation Indexes (SCI, SSCI), provided by ISI.

A Report from CSNA 2001

Bill Shannon, the organizer of CSNA 2001, reported at the board meeting that this year there were 63 attendees; 14 attended the short course on latent class models given by Jay Magidson and 8 attended the short course on consensus problems and group choice presented by Bill Day. A vote of thanks was given to Alison Ebers who, as Secretary in the General Medical Sciences Department (Shannon's department), was instrumental in assisting Bill in organizing and hosting this year's meeting.

From an attendee's perspective, the meeting provided information as well as entertainment. Several of the talks presented different perspectives on the hot topic of microarray data, including presentations by Giovanni Parmigiani, Kay Tatsuoka, and Maciej Faifer from the perspectives of a medical researcher, a pharmaceutical researcher, and a database/datasystems manager, respectively. After a recommendation by Bill Shannon and a follow-up pep talk by David Banks, I agreed to take on the title of CSNA newsletter editor - a perfect excuse to be socially active at the Bowling Hall of Fame Banquet. As well as enjoying good food and conversation we could examine bowling artifacts that could easily have been found in Fred Flintstone's closet, examine the inner workings of an automatic (or manual!) pin setter and enjoy an interesting talk by Willem Heiser. The depiction of the Goddess of Measurement with a clock on her head, a sextant in her hand, a bridle on her tongue, and a snake about her hips was simply not to be missed (shall we expect such stimulating graphics in upcoming issues of the JoC?).

Many thanks for Bill for all of his hard work ... and building momentum for CSNA 2002.
