Chapter 2: Role of Community Colleges

Pathway to a Four-Year Degree

The community college is one step along the path to higher education that a student can take on their educational journey. 46% of all U.S. undergraduate students begin their education at the community college. According to the American Association of Community Colleges, “half of the students who receive a baccalaureate degree attend community college in the course of their undergraduate studies."

Vertical Transfer

Necessary steps in the transfer process include planning ahead and working with a community college academic advisor to facilitate the transfer process.

When planning to transfer to a four-year institution, a student needs to be knowledgeable of the articulation agreements between their community college and the four-year institutions or programs they are applying. The student also needs to work with an academic advisor at the community college to plan a schedule that will make the transfer a successful one.
