Course Preparation

If you truly enjoy math, then math needs to be a vital part of your community college curriculum. In general, we advise you to take as many math courses your current institution offers. Furthermore, we want to stress that it does not matter what level you start but where you finish.

Course Prep

Many careers require the ability to solve problems, and math majors receive a proper base for such problems. When studying math, there is a common sequence, but as you get higher in the course level, things are more flexible. Once finished with Calculus II, you may take other courses in addition to your Calculus III and Differential Equations. Not many community colleges will have math courses past Calculus III, and some may not even offer Calculus III. Check with your advisor to personalize your class schedule for you and your transfer process.

There are many resources online for transfer students. The best resources are the ones on the school websites. If you know which school you are transferring to, check out their website.

If you are interested in transferring to a university in California, they have a great website. The ASSIST website helps you determine the articulation agreements between schools and the transferability of courses you may have taken.

Iowa State University Mathematics Department has a very helpful website for anyone considering a mathematics major.

Michigan State University Mathematics Department also has a great website for prospective math majors. If you are interested in attending Michigan State University, check out this website.
