Ames Cemetery
To start the project, we read poems dealing with death and reduced the feeling of the poem down to one word. We then represented that one word through a charcoal drawing. The word I chose to represent was "Suffering". It is a image I created of a room in a warehouse wear a homeless person might live. Details, such as a tipped over chair, were used to give the viewer a mysterious feeling as well.
We then proceeded to design a small portion of the Ames Cemetery. Required elements were a columbarium and a space for reflection. I incorporated the columbarium into large limestone walls that are juxtaposed with more biomorphic land forms on the hillside of the cemetery. Visitors can then pass through the columbarium area from the side of the hill or the top of the hill and make their way to the reflection area. The reflection area is located on the side of the hill, nestled against the biomorphic curve of the hill. This is intended to be a more comforting space, in contrast to the coldness of the stone walls.
